Description About the role You will join a developing and committed Board of Governors drawn from across our region. This includes three staff governors and three student governors. We have recently recruited three new governors with finance experience and are currently recruiting governors with quality experience to strengthen the skills and diversity of our Board. We have recently approved a new strategic plan for implementation in 2025. This sets out the blueprint for our transformation journey as we continue our mission to provide excellence for our learners and communities. The role of Chair is a crucial one. You will work with the Chief Executive and Principal and Director of Corporate Governance to negotiate and embrace challenges, inspire collaboration and lead our approach to ensure best practice in governance. You will be highly visible with our regulators and as such whilst Higher Education or Further Education experience is not essential, it is desirable; but more than anything, your leadership background and strategic insights are invaluable. You will be supported by a highly professional and committed Executive Leadership Team which will be completed with the recruitment of a substantive Principal CEO and Deputy Principal (these posts are interim at present). A passion for education, sensitivity to the region’s demographics and an understanding of the College’s role as a community anchor are vital, alongside maturity to strengthen governance and experience as a governor or trustee is vital. The role is unremunerated, and we would like you to be able to commit between 2-3 days a month (recognising that flexibility is key). Expenses are available. Meetings of the Board and its Committees are in the early evening, and some are online. Flexibility to be available for regular meetings with staff, students and stakeholders is important. Application Process Please see the attached documents. To apply please complete the application and send this with a covering letter to the Director of Corporate Governance. The covering letter should set out how you meet the requirements of the role and your ambition to become our Chair. The deadline for receipt is 30 January 2025 but we reserve the right to close earlier if we receive a significant number of applications. Selection Process Informal discussions with the Interim Chair, Principal and CEO and Director of Corporate Governance will be scheduled with all candidates. A shortlist of candidates will then be invited to a more formal interview. Recommendations are made to the Corporation which elects its Chair for a term of office. We hope to appoint in February 2025 and a period of transition and handover with our current Interim Chair (who is a national leader in Governance in the sector) will be provided.
