Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the patient is fit for an anaesthetic during surgery. This will involve taking a patient's full medical history and ordering investigations as deemed necessary.
The post holder will identify training needs, plan, implement, and evaluate educational activities for students, new starters, and existing members of non-medical staff (Band 1-6) within their directorate in the Division. However, this will only be 40% of their role as the Pre-operative assessment nurse role will be the predominant aspect of covering and running Pre-operative clinics in our specialist areas of ENT/Plastics, Head and Neck Cancer, and Oral/Maxillofacial. The role will require a clinical expert in this area to share their knowledge and expertise through local training and development for all members of the teams.
Main duties of the job
The main duties of the POA nurse role are to assess a patient's suitability and fitness for surgery and anaesthesia using agreed protocols. The successful post holder will be expected to take a full detailed patient history, carry out a clinical examination of the patient, and where identified, order diagnostic tests and act on results obtained.
The post holder will work 60% of their time clinically in each of the three SSOPD areas as mentioned above, covering POA clinics predominantly as a POA nurse. The further 40% will be designated in the CPE role to work with students, new starters, and existing staff, especially those who are doing postgraduate studies and research. This time will also include identifying training and education needs and planning, implementing, and evaluating education activities in their clinical area of practice.
