Overview
The Director of External Reporting is the senior technical accounting expert within the Group Finance function responsible for the provision of technical accounting advice and expertise to GSK Finance, Corporate Development and Corporate Treasury.
The role involves the provision of accounting expertise and thought leadership in all areas of technical accounting under IFRS including R&D and Commercial deals, divestments and acquisitions, FX, earnings per share, hedge accounting, pension and share based payment accounting plus venture capital arrangements.
Delivery of these responsibilities includes being the principal point of contact with our external auditors throughout the year for technical accounting matters.
The role is responsible for the review of a selection of the notes in the Annual Report and the Quarterly Results Announcements including our accounting policies.
Review and approval of technical accounting papers ahead of key reporting deadlines including hedge accounting documentation. These papers are presented and approved by SVP and/or Board members.
Owner of all technical accounting papers on ESG and in particular climate change activities that require understanding of specialist areas such as VPPA. PPA and derivative accounting.
The role is responsible for the management and career development of two qualified accountants.
The role is pivotal in understanding, externally inputting into and influencing and planning for changes from the principal regulatory bodies (IASB, SEC, ESMA and the FRC) as their work impacts GSK.
This is a technical leadership role that requires significant experience and skills under IFRS as well as established leadership across technical accounting.
Application of knowledge
The technical accounting knowledge will be used to prepare and/or review accounting papers and provide direction and advice to various teams across GSK Finance and senior management in Corporate Finance.
Interaction
Dealing with Finance staff across all functions providing explanations of technical accounting issues to senior Finance management. Required to communicate effectively with Finance staff across GSK, eliciting information as required and providing guidance and direction on accounting issues.
Impact
Advice will be provided on GSK Group transactions, some of which will be significant with the potential for error to have a material impact on the Group’s results. The quarterly results announcements and annual Report are regulatory documents and failure to publish them in accordance with regulatory requirements or within the required timetable could have significant reputational consequences for the Group.
Essential Experience
* Significant technical accounting knowledge and experience preferably in the Life Sciences industry and a listed company
* Significant PQE, with experience of reporting in a listed company environment
* Knowledge and experience of accounting for acquisitions and divestments
* Attention to detail, prioritising between critical and non-critical activities, while identifying areas for process improvement and efficiencies
* Demonstrable ability to develop, mentor and coach team members
* Excellent planning, time management and organisational skills .
* Excellent communication and presentation skills
* Leading change and transformation, bringing a different perspective that enables change to take place
Preferred Experience
* US GAAP experience desirable but not essential
