JOB TITLE: Applications Engineer
REPORTING TO: Applications Manager
JOB PURPOSE
Provide efficient and cost-effective applications support, training, and turn-key solutions for new and existing machine models, both in-house and for end users.
Deliver a high standard of technical support to the pre-sales team, including machine demonstrations, machine setup, time studies, process, tooling, and programming, to meet the needs of sales engineers, dealers, and customers.
Offer technical support, training, and after-sales service to internal staff, dealers, and customers through formal training courses and hands-on guidance.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
Visit customer sites across the UK and Ireland to provide machine setup, prove-out, cutting, and operator training as required, either as part of a new machine sales contract or upon customer request.
Support dealers in various regions by providing machine setup, prove-out, cutting, and engineer training for both new and existing machine models.
Assist the European Sales Manager with dealer requests when needed.
Develop and test machining methods and programs designed to address customers' manufacturing challenges by collaborating with sales engineers and liaising directly with customers.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Conduct machine demonstrations for dealer staff and customers, including setting up and programming machines for either a customer’s component or standard test components. Operate the machine, explain key elements of the process, and address questions in a positive and helpful manner. Work in collaboration with sales engineers during these engagements.
Calculate accurate and realistic cycle time estimates for UK and European sales engineers, utilizing the full machine capabilities to ensure the shortest possible cycle times for production environments.
Carry out installations as required:
Install machines at customer sites and showrooms.
Ensure machines are installed according to factory specifications and report any packing shortages.
Test machine functions to ensure they are safe to use.
Follow the company’s Health & Safety procedures and report any issues encountered during installation.
Liaise with service engineers to ensure a consistently high level of service to customers.
Visit customers to resolve any operational issues with installed machines.
Provide technical support and advice to customers and dealers via telephone.
Stay updated on new machine models and attend manufacturer training courses to provide effective support from the launch date of new machines.
Assist in the development of training courses for new machines.
Provide any other required technical support.
Travel internationally to assist dealer staff with machine setup, programming, and end-user training at dealer premises or customer sites.
Provide support for exhibitions and in-house shows in the UK and across the dealer network.
Be prepared to undertake any other tasks reasonably requested by the company.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Proven experience in an applications role or similar within the machinery industry.
Strong knowledge of metal cutting, tooling, and cutting processes.
Ability to plan manufacturing processes for finished components.
Capable of working independently and as part of a team.
ROLE DEVELOPMENT
Comprehensive product training will be provided over an extended period.
Develop the ability to support service and applications teams through training.
Identify new opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce costs, and maximize revenue potential.
Contribute to the growth and development of new Applications Engineers and Technicians.
EXPECTATIONS
The Applications Engineer is expected to be self-sufficient in most of the listed functions within 6 months, and in more complex tasks within 12 months. Regular progress reviews will be conducted.
