Job overview
An exciting opportunity has opened for a Ward Manager to join our team at the Francis Willis Unit. The Francis Willis Unit is a 15 bedded Male Low Secure Unit in Lincoln. It provides assessment, care and treatment for males detained under the mental health act. Referrals are received from Prisons, PICU Acute Wards and the community and from other secure services.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who has an interest in working within the forensic field.
We are looking for a talented, motivated Ward Manager to join our service.

You must be someone who demonstrates skills and experience of leading teams and can demonstrate an understanding of person-centred holistic, recovery-focused interventions along with a clear understanding of risk management.

Main duties of the job
1. Manage and hold 24-hour responsibility for the provision of clinical care on a ward.
2. To co-ordinate and make effective use of staff, supervise staff and ensure training is maintained.
3. To ensure adequate staffing levels and provide clinical leadership for staff.
4. To ensure cost effective use of resources.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Practice
* Accountable for all nursing practice and can demonstrate involvement of user/carer in practice within their immediate practice setting.
* Continually refine and update their knowledge, skills and attitudes to a higher practice level with regard to their particular practice setting.
* Frequently critique the nursing intervention of the team against latest evidence to assess where improvements could be made.
* Regularly assist in the evaluation of health and social outcomes of clients treated within their team.
* Contribute and assist in the development of a strategic plan to inform practice within the team.
* Provide skilled clinical and managerial supervision to the wider multi-disciplinary team.
* Use specialist knowledge to deal effectively with newly encountered clinical situations.
Leadership
* Accepts overall management responsibility for the delivery of high quality, effective treatment and care within their area of responsibility.
* Demonstrate the ability to manage and lead a team’s development and improvements in their clinical practice.
* Provide advice and consultation on complex clinical matters faced by the team.

Practice Development and Research
* Construct a local service delivery plan in association with other professional groups/stakeholders.

* Give a professional nursing perspective on service delivery.
* Work in partnership with other professional groups to establish the model and philosophy of care appropriate to the care environment.

Person specification
Qualifications
* Degree in mental health and social care or equivalent: 1st Level Registration (NMC,HPC)
* Evidence of specialised continued professional training (degree level) in clinical practice.
* Post Graduate Certificate in Leadership.
* Masters Degree.
Experience
* Post-Registration experience of working with adults with mental health needs.
* Experience of managing staff and good leadership skills.
* Experience in using psychological and acute interventions with up to date knowledge of evidence-based practice.
* Highly developed clinical reasoning skills.
* Sound knowledge of the national agenda for mental health.
* Sound knowledge of clinical/risk assessment and understanding of confidentiality.
* Sound knowledge of the Mental Health Act and Care Programme Approach.
* Evidence of involvement with research initiatives.
Skills
* Prioritisation and resource allocation, planning and organisation skills.
* Able to communicate complex and at times highly sensitive information to a variety of stakeholders.
* Good negotiation skills for conflict resolution.
* IT skills- email, word processing, excel, system use.
* Budget management.
* Self-motivated with excellent personal management skills.
