Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse - Enhanced Recovery (Secondment/Fixed Term)
Bedfordshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Obstetrics and Gynae Directorate for an enthusiastic Band 6 nurse to join our successful Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) team.
The role of an ERAS nurse is to help develop and improve perioperative care using evidenced based practice. The main aim is to reduce the risk of surgical complications which in turn helps to reduce complications and length of stay (LOS).
The successful candidate will help implement the programme into obstetrics and further support the ongoing programme in gynae and other surgical specialties already on the programme. This requires close working relationships with relevant health care professionals.
Recent or current experience within the midwifery/gynae or surgical directorate would be beneficial. If you have knowledge and understanding of the ERAS principles, an interest in education of both patients and staff, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team, this could be the role for you.
Please speak to your Line Manager if you are applying for a secondment and visit your Trust's Secondment Policy. This role is being offered as a 12-month fixed term or secondment.
Main duties of the job
1. Implement the ERAS programme into obstetrics for elective caesarean sections.
2. Continue working with our gynae and other surgical specialties already on the programme.
3. See patients pre-op to manage their expectations in group sessions and one-to-one.
4. Assist new mums on the ward in achieving their safe discharge criteria.
5. Review other surgical patients on the programme when needed.
6. Participate in ward rounds.
7. Teach relevant health care professionals (HCP) on the principles of the programme.
8. Support discharged patients with follow-up phone calls to answer any questions and help reduce the risk of readmission.
9. Collect relevant data, analysing and reviewing trends.
10. Utilize basic computer skills, including the use of Excel spreadsheets (training can be given for the right candidate).
11. Prepare presentations, posters, and abstracts, making this a very varied role.
12. Participate in MDT meetings, including using a voice recorder to prepare the minutes.
Our great team will support you in this exciting role. We actively encourage you to come see for yourself, so informal visits are welcome as fully describing this role is difficult due to its varied nature.
