Job Purpose
This is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, designing, deploying and supporting infrastructure services that form part of the UK’s Critical National Infrastructure. The team maintains a large number of Microsoft Windows and Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers hosted on VMware ESXi.
The successful candidate will work as a member of a team of Windows and Linux administrators performing a variety of tasks from delivery of new business projects and applications to being an escalation point for operational issues and problem management. You will be expected to participate in a compensated Out of Hours standby working arrangement and may be required to work overtime. As the team supports multiple NGED sites, you will be required to travel as part of your duties. You will also work closely with our National Grid Telecoms business unit, becoming the primary contact for interactions between the teams.
What you'll do
Responsibilities include hardware specification and system architecture, deployment and ongoing support of servers and services. The successful candidate will also be exposed to a variety of database platforms, Active Directory integrations, firewalls, TCP/IP and Fibre-Channel networking.
* Assist in the implementation and support of platform, infrastructure and operational services across various domains, both on-premise and cloud.
* Installation and configuration of server-side software and processes, including integration with existing systems.
* Assisting in upgrading, maintenance and operational support escalations for a large and diverse estate of platform services and infrastructure.
* Liaising with third party software providers and systems integrators.
* Writing documentation for system installations, upgrades and operational procedures.
* Liaise with other teams to provide and troubleshoot ITD services.
* Supervise contractors working for NGED on behalf of ITD.
* Undertake other duties and project tasks appropriate to the grade.
* Be part of a Standby rota, providing critical out-of-hours support when needed.
About you
* Experience of virtualisation technologies such as VMWare.
* An understanding of system security and how to harden a server/service.
* Software development skills: bash scripting, Powershell and Python. Other high-level language experience would be advantageous.
* An IT qualification or equivalent accreditations.
* Previous experience within the TELCO industry.
* Ability to obtain Security Clearance (SC) to perform this role.

The role is based in Taunton but our Hybrid working policy does allow a mix of working from the office and home, subject to certain requirements.
