Birmingham Children’s Hospital is seeking to appoint a Consultant Paediatric Oncologist with an existing interest in brain tumours in children. Birmingham Children’s Hospital is one of the largest dedicated children’s cancer centres in the UK, receiving in the order of 250 new referrals each year; approximately 10% of UK childhood malignancies. This is a new post which will provide additional support to the existing team of 4.9 WTE NHS consultant oncologists, 4 part-time academic colleagues (2 Professorial appointments and 2 Senior Lecturer), 1 part-time honorary NHS consultant and a part-time Specialty Doctor. The existing Oncology teams provides the full range of tertiary oncology services and have sub-specialty interest in neuro-oncology, general solid tumour oncology, TYA oncology, late-effects and retinoblastoma covering an extensive geographical area. The department has a varied research portfolio including a world-leading programme in functional imaging and metabolism for CNS tumours. The post-holder will oversee the day-to-day management of in-patients through participation in the departmental weekly “on-service” and out-of-hours rota along with undertaking regular outpatient clinics and attendance at appropriate MDT’s. There will be a liaison role with the well-established Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Units (POSCU’s). The successful candidate will be eligible for inclusion on the specialist register for Paediatric Oncology or be within 6 months of completion of higher specialist training or equivalent .
