The NIHR Undergraduate Internship Programme The Undergraduate Internship Programme (UIP) is a new scheme organised by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) to provide health and social care research experience to undergraduate students in their 2nd or 3rd year of degree-level study. All internships are fully-funded. This programme, which is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHCS), will allow interns to gain hands-on research experience in the area or discipline they are interested in pursuing, with support provided by an experienced supervisory and mentorship team. This opportunity will be ideal for students who are interested in pursuing a career in health and social care research after their degree. The Role The Department of Psychology at the University of Bath are delighted to be offering an internship position for one undergraduate student. The successful candidate will be offered a placement (with an expected end date of 31 March 2025) in the Child Mental Health and Development research group ( https://www.bath.ac.uk/research-groups/child-mental-health-and-development/ ). The successful candidate will be required to complete 20 hours research work per week, which can be flexibly arranged around their studies. You will have access to a small training and development fund (£200) to attend courses or training that will enhance their internship experience. The intern will have dedicated supervision and mentorship throughout the placement to support them with their research responsibilities and wider career development. You will work under supervision to provide research support to an ESRC-funded longitudinal study examining the role of caregiver support in child recovery after trauma in South Africa. The study is generating exceptionally rich quantitative and qualitative data relating to experiences of trauma-exposed children and their families, a research area that is a significant public health concern. The intern will work on a discrete part of the study, including analysis and disseminating findings of qualitative data. This will include coding interview transcripts for aspects of behaviour and coping post-trauma, and using qualitative methods methods to draw out themes regarding the use of faith-based coping mechanisms. Patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) is at the heart of this study, and the successful applicant will gain a good understanding of the importance of these values in public health research, by both completing a training course during their placement and engaging with our collaborators at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa. This role is offered on a part time (20 hours per week) fixed term basis with an expected duration of 3 months. About you As per the NIHR UIP guidance, applicants must: Be in their second or third year of enrolment in degree-level study in a discipline related to public health (e.g., Psychology, Health, Life Sciences) at the University of Bath. Be willing and committed to explore a career in health and social care research. In addition, applicants to the internship should have: Essential A strong interest in mental health research, particularly in lower-and-middle income countries. A demonstrable understanding of qualitative research methods. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. Effective communication skills in diverse and multicultural research environments. A commitment to developing skills in public and patient involvement and engagement. Desirable Experience in the collection or analysis of qualitative research data. Experience of relevant software for managing qualitative data (e.g., NVivo).
