Consultant Paediatrician with special interest in Neonates

The successful candidate will be a neonatal interest paediatrician and will join a team of 12 paediatric consultants at Bedford Hospital. Overall the team provide 1 in 10 attending, on call cover to general Paediatrics and a Special Care Neonatal Unit. The post holder will join two other colleagues with a Neonatal Interest who will provide support and oversight to the Neonatal Unit, undertaking 1 in 6.5 neonatal unit attending weeks as well as 1 in 10 paediatric attending weeks (In total 13 attending weeks per year) in addition to infant clinics, paediatric clinics and general paediatric cover. You would be working closely with the neonatal intensive care team at Luton & Dunstable hospital, which provides tertiary care.
The Bedfordshire Hospital's Neonatal Service includes a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Level 3) on The Luton and Dunstable Hospital site and a Special Care Unit on the Bedford Hospital site. Clinical teams currently work predominantly on dedicated sites and this post does not currently include any clinical commitments on the Luton site. The Luton and Dunstable Hospital NICU is the lead Neonatal unit for the Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire cluster of neonatal units and there are local Neonatal Units (Level 2) at Lister Hospital, Stevenage and Watford General Hospital.
Main duties of the job
1. Regular weeks of neonatal weeks which would happen in a 1:6.5 frequency approximately where you would provide clinical work, leadership and supervision as the consultant of the week.
2. Regular infant clinics and general paediatric clinics (50 clinics per year).
3. Participating in regular paediatric hot weeks which happen in a 1:10 frequency where you would provide clinical work, leadership and supervision.
4. Participating regularly in neonatal and paediatric governance meetings, risk meetings, perinatal meetings, PANDR meetings etc. and having close working relationship with the sister tertiary unit at L&D. Opportunities for Neonatal CPD are available through virtual attendance at Neonatal Teaching sessions and the weekly Grand Round in Luton and Dunstable NICU.
5. You would be encouraged to take on trainees for educational and clinical supervision. You would also be participating in teaching for medical students and delivering regular teaching sessions for junior doctors.
6. The appointee will be encouraged to take an active role in any relevant committees or sub-committees approved by the Trust.
7. The appointee will be asked to help produce, maintain and update departmental clinical management guidelines in line with evidence based best practice.
8. There would be plenty of opportunities in engaging in other leadership and managerial activities on a Trust wide basis.

Job responsibilities
A 10 PA week consists of 8.5 PAs direct clinical care and 1.5 PAs for Supporting Professional Activity (SPA).
Job planning will be used to reflect the needs of the department, ensuring that contracted work is appropriately remunerated. An initial job plan review will be undertaken by the Clinical Director after 3 months and annually thereafter, or if the work pattern changes. Any additional PAs contracted by the Trust will be agreed as a separate part of the job plan by mutual consent.
The Trust is committed to extending the working day and to seven day working and hence by negotiation successful appointees may be asked to work earlier in the mornings, later in the evenings or at weekends in exchange for other day time duties. TOIL is offered when Consultants work i.e. on Bank Holidays and this is in line with Terms & Conditions.
The Direct Clinical Care PAs will consist attending on the ward, Neonatal Unit and Children's Assessment unit along with 1 in 10 night on call as well as general paediatric clinics. The appointee will have/develop a special interest in neonates and help in providing leadership and ongoing care for the babies on our special care unit.
The job plan is flexible subject to discussion with the department and candidates experience. The successful candidate will be covering the paediatric ward and NNU as Consultant and will be doing a 1 in 10 on call rota at par with other Consultant colleagues in the department.
Minimum Requirements
1. Excellent all round experience of DGH work
2. Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a wide range of Paediatric conditions
3. At least six months of neonatal experience in tertiary neonatal unit at middle grade level
4. Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
5. Ability to prioritise and organise work effectively
6. Willingness to participate in and lead on multidisciplinary teams, balancing departmental and personal objectives
7. Level 3 Child protection training
8. APLS/ EPLS course or equivalent

* Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice

Qualifications
* MB BS, MRCPCH or equivalent
* MD, PhD or other higher degree
Knowledge and Clinical Skills

* APLS/ EPLS & NLS course or equivalent
