Assistant Transfusion Practitioner – Queen Elizabeth Hospital Woolwich (QEH)
An exciting fixed term opportunity has come up within the East and South East London (ESEL) Pathology Network, for an enthusiastic Assistant Transfusion Practitioner at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Woolwich, who shares our vision of a high-quality transfusion service.
Main duties of the job
Previous experience or knowledge of the blood transfusion process is desirable but not essential as full training will be provided for the right candidate.
The post holder will assist and support site-based Specialist Transfusion Practitioners in the provision of efficient and effective service by co-ordinating key administrative functions to ensure effective service to the highest possible standard.
The post holder will be responsible for monitoring closely the traceability of all issued units daily and will assist the clinical departments with the return of all traceability labels to the blood transfusion laboratory in a timely fashion.

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.
The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.
Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry; Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology; Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services; Immunology; Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology; Immunophenotyping; Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.
The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
The post holder will be responsible for traceability data entry & extraction and will support in the production of performance / compliance reports. In addition, this role will assist and will support the Specialist Transfusion Practitioners, as instructed, in writing minutes of meetings held at respective sites.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
1. GCSE passes in English and Maths or equivalent
Desirable criteria
2. GCSE standard attained in other science subjects or equivalent
Experience
Essential criteria
3. Experience as an HCA / MLA or administrator
4. Experience in carrying out assigned duties/assisting qualified staff after training
5. Good standard of written and spoken English
6. A well-developed understanding of data retrieval, data processing and information interpretation. Aware of the role medical laboratories.
Desirable criteria
7. Aware of the health care systems and recent policy developments in the NHS
8. Experience of dealing with the public in person and on the phone
9. Working in a multidisciplinary team

13. Literate and numerate
