We are inviting applicants to apply for the Fellowship in Spinal Surgery at Ipswich Hospital.
The successful candidate will work with the 8 consultants in the Spinal Unit at Ipswich Hospital.
The post would be ideally suited to an orthopaedic or Neurosurgical trainee towards the end of their training with a specialist interest in spinal surgery techniques and complex spinal reconstruction. Any on call work carries additional remuneration.
This is post is for period of 12 months, extendable to 18 to 24 depending on needs, performance and availability.
The post offers experience in all aspects of spinal surgery except paediatric deformity & intradural work.
The Spine Fellow will have the opportunity to be involved in the spinal on call service, regular day case procedures, out-patient clinics, in-patient operating lists and regular research sessions.
The Spine Fellow will be responsible for regular review of the ward patients and coordinating the admission of spinal emergencies from surrounding hospitals.

At Ipswich we are investing £35million in a new Emergency Department and co-located Urgent Treatment Centre, with additional diagnostic imaging kit (MRI and CT). There’s a £5.3million molecular diagnostic laboratory soon to open at Ipswich, and works begins soon for a new Breast Care Centre and a Children’s Unit.

The Spine Fellow will be assigned to a named Clinical Educational Supervisor within the Spinal Unit for six months blocks. Within a 40hr contract, each ICENI Centre Fellow will contribute approximately:
• Supervised clinical activity within theatre of approximately 3-4 half-day sessions per week
• Supervised clinical activity within out-patient clinics of approximately 3 sessions per week
• Research and CPD activity of approximately 1 sessions per week
• Participation on the spinal on-call rota
• Involvement in clinical teaching of ST/FY doctors and medical students
• Participation in assessment, appraisal and revalidation activity
• Managing trauma patients while on-call, on wards and attending trauma calls as necessary
