Job overview
We are seeking a well-motivated, compassionate individual with lived experience of mental ill health within old age psychiatry, either through own personal experience or through a caring role. Your function would be to educate medical students from Nottingham University using your lived experience as a tool to aid understanding that cannot be found in books. Lived experience is a vital element of our medical education programme which we actively promote and support.
Main duties of the job
1. Contribute to the development and delivery of the ‘Lived Experience’ learning across the undergraduate and graduate entry medical student training programme in Derby & Chesterfield with a friendly and caring approach.
2. Support in further development and delivery of the expert patient programme in Derby & Chesterfield.
3. Work with educational/training leads to further develop the experiential learning training programme involving expert patients.

1. Continue to recruit increased numbers of expert patients and carers so that they can share their lived experience to enhance medical students' learning.
2. Provide training, guidance, and support to the expert patients & carers who are participating in the medical students’ learning experience in old age psychiatry.
3. Escalate any concerns or issues relating to the expert patient’s wellbeing or the impact of their mental ill health upon others, to a more senior member of the team.
4. Co-ordinate with the expert patients and carers to deliver lived experience teaching.
5. Develop new links with community statutory and voluntary services and work alongside clinical educators and consultants to set up new student placements.
6. Maintain positive working relationships through liaising and establishing feedback with those community services & resources.
7. Provide support and mentorship to the expert patients and carers who actively participate in teaching.
8. Collect and evaluate feedback from medical students, staff, expert patients, and carers with the teaching team.
9. Provide written feedback reports on expert patient and carers teaching content and outcomes.
10. Review teaching materials and provide written feedback from a lived experience perspective to present to the wider team for review.
11. Contribute to data collection and analysis for audit and research to improve the quality of teaching as a part of academic governance.
12. Co-facilitate simulation training along with the medical tutors/clinical educators.
13. Follow processes and protocols that seek to preserve the well-being and ensure the safety of the expert patients and carers who contribute to our work.
Person specification
Qualifications
* Level 2/GCSE Grade C or 4 preferable for English and Maths
* NVQ Level 3 qualification or equivalent in a relevant field
* Educated to degree level or equivalent
Skills
* The post-holder will require lived experience and knowledge of mental health services as either a service user or carer in old age psychiatry
* Experience in participating in teaching and/or training of dementia, delirium, mental health conditions, and physical frailty.
* Attend relevant training as identified to fulfil the role of Lived Experience Facilitator. Be able to maintain an up-to-date knowledge and comply with all the relevant trust policies and work in adherence to the trust values.
* Experience of teaching large or small groups
