The Wellcome Trust is a global charitable foundation. We improve health for everyone by funding science, leading policy and advocacy campaigns, and building partnerships.
We plan to spend £16bn over the next ten years, funding new discoveries in life, health, and wellbeing, and taking on three global health challenges: mental health, infectious disease and climate and health.
Wellcome Mental Health’s vision is a world in which no-one is held back by mental health problems. We aim to achieve this through a step-change in early interventions for anxiety, depression and psychosis.
We are looking to recruit a Knowledge Lead in Mental Health. The Knowledge and Measurement team has the goal of creating a vibrant mental health science field by advancing the agenda of collaboration, coherence, and focus via knowledge systems and measurement. This role’s specific focus is on the generation, dissemination, and use of knowledge in the field.
In this role, you will work closely with the Head and Measurement Lead in Knowledge and Measurement, together leading the team to strategise and advance our agenda. You will lead on knowledge projects for Knowledge and Measurement, including mechanisms to encourage uptake and use among the mental health science community.
In this role you will:
1. Work with the Head to devise, modify, and review Wellcome’s Knowledge and Measurement strategy in mental health, including team activities, with a specific focus on knowledge generation, dissemination, and use.
2. Take primary responsibility for the running and delivery of existing knowledge projects (including existing commissioned evidence syntheses and Wellcome-led convening), maximising value and impact for the mental health community. Lead strategy to encourage uptake, engagement, and evolution of these projects according to the community’s needs.
3. Devise new projects to improve coherence and focus, and catalyse collaboration, in mental health science, with the clear goal of measurable and substantial impact on the field.
4. With the Head and Measurement Lead, identify major activities for the Knowledge and Measurement team to pursue in an integrated manner, defining and coordinating work packages for the team, overseeing shaping and scoping activities, launch of major commissions or grants, and evaluating process as it iterates. Work with the Head and Measurement Lead to develop and articulate a clear, impactful vision for Wellcome’s Knowledge and Measurement portfolio.
5. With the Head and Measurement Lead, oversee integration of Knowledge and Measurement activities with other mental health sub-teams as well as other teams within Wellcome. This will include liaison with Evidence, Translation, and Lived Experience colleagues on projects addressing issues within the research ecosystem, such as early careers and capacity building in low-income and middle-income contexts.
6. Continue to build a global understanding of the breadth and latest developments in relevant discovery research fields, with a view on the challenges and opportunities facing researchers at different levels.
To be successful in this role you will have:
1. Proven significant experience and knowledge of the mental health field as a whole, with first-hand experience as a clinician, researcher, information specialist, or policymaker.
2. A proven degree of engagement with the mental health field, and demonstrable knowledge of key issues and controversies.
3. Technical expertise in one or both of: clinical understanding of mental health issues; knowledge dissemination and uptake.
4. Ability to read, process, and synthesise knowledge regarding scientific research, including work outside one’s field.
5. Experience of taking initiative, devising, and executing strategic plans.
6. Experience of working with multiple stakeholders across disciplines.
