Deputy Port Manager - Tees/Tyne The principle purpose the role is to support the port manager to plan, direct and control all operational activities within a given port to achieve business goals, profit and operational effectiveness targets. Being able to create strong followership for a large workforce is crucial for the port and to succeed in driving positive industrial relations outcomes. Based on the nature of the Port the role is responsible for actively managing the reputation of Svitzer locally with a number of external and internal stakeholders e.g. customers, agencies, port authorities and functional teams. The success of the role is realised when below responsibilities are deployed in alignment with the identified business objectives: Main Responsibilities Responsible for the provision of marine operational expertise to ensure all vessels and crew meet their safety, environmental and operational requirements. Working alongside the Port Manager to manage the marine operations ensuring that Svitzer obligations for availability of expertise, equipment and personnel are met at all times, in order to maintain customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. Maximise the operational efficiency and effectiveness of marine operations Responsible for maintaining efficient towage operations Have full understanding of the port’s commercial situation and contracts and assist & deputise for the Port Manager in commercial & marine activities where required. Financial responsibilities Support the Port Manager to prepare budgets and financial plans for the port. To monitor and control the port operating budget to ensure that all resources are deployed effectively and that the port is running at optimal operational efficiency. To report back on a regular basis on the ports performance to key stakeholders, both internally and externally as applicable. Operations To manage all operational issues and the port entity as a profit centre. To protect all assets ensuring that they are properly maintained. To seek continual improvements in service to our customers. Manage the relationship with the Port Authority and other statutory bodies and community groups. Assist the Port Manager and Commercial Teams in business development/sales activities including the preparation of commercial/Business Development Tenders. Build and nurture relationships with local customers to derive maximum value from the business relationship. Work with Marine standards to promote safe operations, quality assurance and security of the business. Implement security plans for the port to ensure the protection of people and assets. Safety Proactively support Svitzer’s commitment to safety, ensuring that all operations are risk assessed, adequately resourced and all appropriate procedures as defined in HMS, permits and licences are in place. Ensure compliance with all health safety environmental and regulatory demands. Manage and be accountable for the deployment of the requirements of the HMS system in the port. Ensure that in liaison with Marine Standards all accidents are fully investigated and incident reports prepared. People Liaise with Crewing regarding the daily operations of crew and rosters. Work with the Crewing Manager to recruit people with the relevant skills, qualifications and attributes to the business. Working with training to ensure that all crews have up to date certification Assist Port Manager whilst supported by HR, manage the relationship with the local union branch, holding regular consultation meetings and resolving any disputes that may arise. Have a good understanding of HR policies and processes and to handle disciplinary and grievance cases. Drive up employee engagement through effective day to day management of our people and ensuring that people are kept informed of what is happening in the business. Required/Preferred Education Educated to degree level or equivalent experience. Previous management experience within an operational environment P&L ownership and successful past deliveries in similar environment Thorough understanding of Maritime Rules, Regulations, Codes and Guidelines; ISM Code and ISPS requirements and class preferred Shore side marine experience required, particularly with regard to regulations and legislation Experience of working with and managing budgets Understanding how to drive engagement and culture A Marine qualification and previous marine experience Personal attributes Excellent Leadership Skills and influencing skills Ability to think strategically Capability to work with ambiguity and under pressure Excellent verbal and written communication skills Management capabilities – prioritising and planning work to be executed.
