We welcome applications for an enthusiastic colleague to work alongside the seven current Respiratory Physicians in the Somerset Lung Centre at Musgrove Park Hospital, Somerset NHS Foundation Trust. Our areas of expertise include complex airways disease, sleep and ventilation, lung cancer and pleural disease including advanced diagnostics (EBUS and thoracoscopy), interstitial lung disease and integrated care via our Respiratory@Home service.
We actively encourage colleagues to develop sub-specialist services according to their interests. Clinical research activity is supported in the department, as are medical education, quality improvement and leadership roles. The Trust has a reputation for being a friendly and supportive organisation. We have an excellent track record for teaching and training, receiving consistently excellent feedback from the GMC Trainee Survey.
The Respiratory Team currently contribute to the general medical take rota, with respiratory medicine accounting for more than 20% of acute admissions. We provide a consultant-led weekday review service for inpatient referrals on Acute Medical Unit and other wards. This promotes early access to respiratory expertise. We aim to provide high quality, safe patient care, excellent patient experience and outcomes with low length of stay.
Main duties of the job
You and your clinical manager will agree a prospective Job Plan that sets out your main duties and responsibilities, a schedule for carrying out your Programmed Activities, your managerial responsibilities, your accountability arrangements, your objectives and supporting resources. This post is a Taunton-based appointment.
Job responsibilities
To provide, to a high standard, the full range of specialist diagnosis, treatment and care to patients requiring respiratory and acute medical services both as in and outpatients, as outlined in the proposed programme.
To organise, manage and be responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients in Musgrove Park Hospital.
Except in emergencies, or where otherwise agreed with your manager, you are responsible for fulfilling the duties and responsibilities and undertaking the Programmed Activities set out in your Job Plan, as reviewed from time to time.
You will also be required to participate in an on-call rota to provide emergency cover and to provide enhanced medical / respiratory support to the hospital. When not on an on-call rota, we may in exceptional circumstances ask you to return to site for emergencies if we are able to contact you. You are not, however, required to be available for such eventualities. Where emergency recalls of this kind become frequent, we will review the need to introduce an on-call rota.
