Community Occupational Therapists play a key role in the statutory provision of services, completing assessments, problem solving and promoting safety. The service promotes independence and quality of life by giving advice on how to carry out tasks differently; by suggesting equipment to assist with self-care tasks; recommending alterations to property through the Disabled Facilities Grant process to make the environment more accessible and signposting to other agencies for further support and interventions.
The service actively promotes best practice and quality and supports a model of coproduction with customers.
Community Occupational Therapists should possess the skills to work collaboratively with other professionals and services and have effective communication and listening skills. Candidates should be able to produce good quality customer records and reports.
Therapies work Monday to Friday, and the council offers flexible working patterns, including a combination of office based and agile working.
Annual Leave entitlement starts at 26 days, rising to 31 days after 5 years service, with previous working in council or NHS roles considered for annual leave entitlement. For candidates already employed in NHS roles, there is the option to maintain existing candidates NHS pension, with contributions made from the council, provided conditions are met.
Main duties of the job
Applicants for the position should have a recognised degree or diploma in Occupational Therapy and current registration with the Health & Care Professions Council. Candidates should also have post graduate working experience in health or social care as an Occupational Therapist.
Successful candidates will undertake an induction programme, and ongoing training will be provided. Supervision will be provided by a Team Manager who will provide regular consultation and annual appraisal to identify learning objectives.
Job responsibilities
Main purpose of job
To assist in the efficient provision of high-quality Occupational Therapy services to meet the identified needs of adults recovering from illness, trauma or decline in long term conditions or experiencing the effects of the aging process.
Key responsibilities
1. To carry an allocated caseload of customers.
2. To support customers to achieve recovery and rehabilitation in a variety of settings, which may include community bed-based services, care homes and/or customers own homes.
3. To provide holistic assessments of the customer identifying areas of need and ensuring that appropriate provision is made to improve quality of life.
4. To work to set standards within the service under the supervision of the Senior Practitioner/Team Manager.
Key tasks
1. To complete assessments of customers' needs which may include, but not limited to, functional assessments; assessment and provision of assistive equipment; provision of rehabilitation.
2. To be adaptable and flexible within the service areas, working alongside senior therapists to ensure effective provision of the identified service.
3. Work alongside Occupational Therapy & Physiotherapy colleagues, Senior Practitioners, and the Team Manager to deliver an effective, safe, high quality service.
4. To demonstrate the ability to conduct an appropriate assessment to the customer.
5. To advise customers of the correct use of equipment provided by the Local Authority.
6. To undertake assessment for provision of standard wheelchairs with some other enhanced prescribing rights at the direction of the Team Manager.
7. To work in collaboration with other services.
8. To refer customers to other services.
9. To record all assessments and take responsibility for data input.
10. To recognise limitations and identify to senior therapists when support is required.
11. To take an active role in project related activities within the service under the direction of the senior practitioner/Team Manager.
12. To identify learning needs and areas for development, alongside senior therapists/team managers.
13. To participate in learning opportunities within the service.
14. To participate in student education within the service.
15. Complies with the organisations and services essential training requirements.
16. Maintains own Continuous Professional Development through a variety of learning methods.
17. Participates in supervision and appraisal with line manager.
18. Maintains individual professional registration with the Health & Care Professions Council.
