Consultant in Geriatric and General Medicine
Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trusts
The HCOP specialty is looking to recruit a consultant in Geriatric and General Medicine with a responsibility in Acute Geriatric Medicine for Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Working in the Heath Care of Older People (HCOP) specialty, the post-holders will be able to discuss their job plans, which are reviewed annually. Responsibilities may include:
1. Shared consultant responsibility on one of our eight acute/subacute HCOP wards.
2. Improving our commitment to frail older people within the acute medical and frailty pathways.
3. Covering the Geriatric Assessment Unit (GAU) and HCOP In Reach to ED.
4. Providing support to Community geriatrics and various surgical liaison services (including outliers).
Main duties of the job
The role of the acute medical Geriatrician has been developed over the last five years to provide specialist HCOP medical input to frail older people within the acute medical admission pathway. Our experience shows that patients who are on the Geriatric Assessment Unit, working with a multidisciplinary team, result in more frail older people being discharged earlier in the pathway.
We in-reach into the Emergency Department and work alongside the emergency physicians in identifying frailty at the front door. We are part of the Acute Frailty Network and have been labeled a beacon site by them. More consultant geriatricians are being appointed to enable us to deliver this service more consistently across the week. We expect these roles to develop and change over the coming months and years as the acute medical pathways are reviewed to better meet the increasing demands being placed on them.
About us
The specialty of HCOP sits managerially within the Division of Medicine alongside Acute Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Stroke Medicine, Diabetic Medicine, Cardiology, and Cardiac Surgery. The Division of Medicine is split into three directorates, with HCOP sitting within the Integrated Care Directorate with Stroke.
NUH is a Centre of Excellence in the clinical care, teaching, and research of Health Care of Older People. We have developed a broad range of subspecialties to meet patient needs across the health community, and our aim is to ensure that this continues.

Any consultant who is unable, for personal reasons, to work full-time will be eligible to be considered for the post on a part-time basis; if such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.
All new consultants can access a mentor within the department or an external mentor can be arranged. There is a new consultants group in NUH to support new consultants.
