JOB SUMMARY:
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Highways Designer & Coordinator to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing, planning, and coordinating highway infrastructure projects, ensuring compliance with relevant UK standards and regulations. This role requires strong technical expertise, project management skills, and the ability to collaborate with stakeholders at various levels. As our Highways Designer & Coordinator, you will be working closely with our Technical Director and Civils & Groundworks Director to ensure the successful delivery of our civils & highway projects.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Develop detailed engineering designs for highway and road projects, including S38 and S278 applications.
2. Prepare drawings, specifications and health and safety plans for highway construction projects.
3. Ensure designs comply with UK highway standards, including DMRB, Manual for Streets, and local authority specifications.
4. Collaborate with regulatory agencies to obtain necessary permits and approvals, including assisting the contractor team with organizing traffic management designs and road work licenses.
5. Conduct feasibility studies and preliminary designs to support project planning.
6. Manage and oversee highway design projects from conception to completion.
7. Conduct inspections to ensure construction activities align with design specifications on occasion if necessary.
8. Address, challenge or resolve any design-related issues during the construction phase.
9. Prepare health and safety documentation, design risk registers and operation & maintenance manuals to ensure all designs are CDM compliant.
10. Liaise with local authorities, clients, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure efficient project delivery.
REQUIREMENTS
ESSENTIAL:
1. Degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation, or a related discipline.
2. Proven experience in highway design and project coordination.
3. Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD & Civil 3D.
4. Strong knowledge of UK highway design standards (DMRB, Manual for Streets, TSRGD).
5. Knowledge of Traffic Management Act and S278/S38 agreements.
6. Experience working with local authorities and relevant regulatory bodies.
7. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
8. Strong problem-solving ability and attention to detail.
9. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
10. Full UK driving licence.
11. Thoroughness in reviewing and preparing design documents to ensure accuracy.
