Oakhyrst Grange School is a thriving independent preparatory school in Caterham, Surrey, committed to providing an outstanding education in a nurturing and supportive environment. As we continue to develop and strengthen our governance, we are seeking new Governors with expertise in education, legal, accounting, or risk management to join our Board.
Role Summary
Governors play a crucial role in the strategic leadership of Oakhyrst Grange School. They provide oversight, ensure the school’s financial and operational sustainability, and support the Headteacher in delivering the school’s mission and values. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to independent education.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide strategic direction and oversight for the school’s development.
* Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., ISI, Charity Commission, Companies House).
* Support and challenge the Senior Leadership Team in achieving educational excellence.
* Monitor financial health, ensuring sustainability and effective risk management.
* Safeguard the school’s reputation, ethos, and values.
* Participate in Governor meetings, committee work, and occasional school events.
Person Specification
We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in the following areas:
* Education: Experience in teaching, school leadership, curriculum development, or independent education governance.
* Legal: Knowledge of education law, governance, charity law, or regulatory compliance.
* Accounting & Finance: Background in financial management, auditing, or investment oversight, ideally with experience in charity or independent school finance.
* Risk Management: Understanding of enterprise risk, compliance frameworks, and safeguarding best practices.
* Commitment to the school’s vision and values.
* Strong analytical and decision-making skills.
* Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
* Willingness to engage in training and development.
Time Commitment
Governors attend approximately 6–8 board meetings per year and, if possible, attend one of the sub-committees (Finance & Estate, Education & Welfare, Health & Safety) which also have 6-8 meetings per year, plus potentially the occasional school events and training.
