Role: Director of Environmental Policy & Compliance Salary: Competitive Location: Southampton, Hampshire (hybrid available) The Director of Environmental Policy & Compliance will lead and manage the AVASK’s Cyclical Economy initiatives, with a particular focus on policy, governance, and their commercial derivatives. This role will emphasize Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), Batteries, and Single Use Plastics (SUPs), alongside other key Cyclical Economy policies. The successful candidate will be highly commercially astute and agile, with proven hands-on experience in managing business units, providing technical leadership, and delivering processes and procedures that align with sustainability and compliance goals. Director of Environmental Policy & Compliance, the role Define and execute a global strategy for EPR, WEEE, Batteries, and SUPs that aligns with organisational goals and supports international growth. Lead efforts to influence and shape Cyclical Economy policies through collaboration with government agencies, industry groups, and non-governmental organisations. Provide strategic advisory services to Senior Management and the board on matters relating to EPR, WEEE, Batteries, Single Use Plastics, and other cyclical economy areas. Ensure compliance with EPR, WEEE, Batteries, and SUP regulations across multiple jurisdictions, managing filings and submissions to meet all deadlines. Oversee the development, execution, and continuous improvement of compliance programs related to packaging, waste collection, recycling, and reuse initiatives. Develop and enforce robust controls and procedures to mitigate risks and ensure alignment with global and local regulatory frameworks. Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of cyclical economy initiatives and drive improvements. Identify opportunities for innovation in EPR processes, recycling systems, and resource optimisation to enhance environmental outcomes. Conduct training sessions and workshops to educate employees and partners on EPR, WEEE, Batteries, and SUP compliance requirements and best practices. Stay ahead of global legislative changes and update policies, procedures, and compliance strategies to align with evolving Cyclical Economy regulations. Collaborate with internal teams, partners, and stakeholders to integrate cyclical economy principles into the company’s overall sustainability strategy. Prepare reports on compliance activities and performance metrics to share with senior leadership and external stakeholders. Promote and advocate for best practices in resource efficiency, waste reduction, and circular product design. Director of Environmental Policy & Compliance, about you Educational Background: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree is preferred. Professional Experience: 8-10 years of experience in environmental compliance, sustainability, or a related field, with at least 5 years in a leadership role. Demonstrated expertise in EPR, WEEE, Batteries, Single Use Plastics, and Circular Economy initiatives. Strong knowledge of policy development, governance frameworks, and commercial implications of cyclical economy initiatives. Experience in implementing compliance programs for Packaging EPR, WEEE collection and recycling, Batteries management, Plastic Tax Packaging, and SUP reduction strategies. Technical Skills: Subject matter expert in Packaging EPR, WEEE Compliance, Batteries Compliance, and SUP management. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills. Ability to lead and inspire cross-functional teams to deliver high-impact results. Relevant certifications in environmental management or compliance are a plus. Soft Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills for effective engagement with internal and external stakeholders. Highly organised and detail-oriented, with a commitment to accuracy and continuous improvement.
