Position Overview
We are looking for a dedicated Lab Technician to join our team of 8 staff members and a suite of contractors, working in our new lab in Dundee. The role will be on-site, where the role holder will collaborate closely with the rest of the lab team.
The role holder will support scientific investigations and experiments by preparing, conducting, and analysing tests and measurements in a laboratory setting. The role involves handling various laboratory equipment, conducting tests on samples, recording data, and maintaining a clean and safe work environment.
The technician plays a crucial role in quality control, research and development processes across various industries including healthcare, pharmaceuticals, environmental science, and manufacturing.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Sample Collection and Preparation:
o Collect, prepare, and process samples (e.g., biological, chemical, environmental) for testing.
o Label and store samples in accordance with established protocols.
2. Testing and Analysis:
o Perform routine and specialised laboratory tests as directed by standard operating procedures (SOPs).
o Use laboratory equipment (e.g., pipettes, thermocyclers, centrifuges, etc) to analyse samples.
o Record, analyse, and interpret data accurately.
3. Equipment Maintenance:
o Calibrate, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure proper functionality.
o Troubleshoot and report any equipment malfunctions to the supervisor.
4. Data Management and Documentation:
o Document test results, observations, and findings in logs or laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
o Ensure accuracy and compliance with quality control protocols.
5. Health and Safety Compliance:
o Follow strict safety guidelines, including wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) and handling hazardous materials safely.
o Adhere to laboratory safety regulations, including proper waste disposal and sanitation practices.
6. Quality Assurance:
o Participate in quality control checks, audits, and calibration of instruments to ensure test accuracy and reliability.
o Assist in improving and implementing new testing protocols as required.
7. Inventory and Supplies:
o Manage laboratory supplies and chemicals, ensuring stock levels are maintained.
o Order supplies when necessary and ensure proper storage and labelling.
Qualifications:
1. Education: Associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree in laboratory science, biology, chemistry, or a related field.
2. Experience: Minimum 1-3 years of experience in a laboratory setting (preferable but not required, new graduates will be considered).
Skills:
* Strong attention to detail and organisational skills.
* Knowledge of laboratory safety and cleanliness standards.
* Proficiency in laboratory techniques and using specialised equipment.
* Basic computer skills, including experience with data entry and laboratory information management systems (LIMS).
* Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
* Strong communication and teamwork abilities.
Key Competencies:
* Technical Skills: Familiarity with laboratory methods and tools including DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, and other basic molecular techniques.
* Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot issues related to lab equipment and procedures.
* Accuracy: Commitment to performing precise and thorough tests and documentation.
* Time Management: Ability to manage multiple tasks and adhere to deadlines.
Working Conditions:
