The North East has a rich and underexplored LGBTQIA+ cultural history. Applications are invited for a Collaborative Doctoral Award studentship, funded by Northern Bridge and based at Newcastle University and Tyne and Wear Archives, which will build on existing partnerships between Newcastle University, Tyne and Wear Archives, and other regional cultural organisations including Curious Arts to:
* Map LGBTQIA+ presences in TWA and other archives
* Address gaps in the archival representation of LGBTQIA+ cultural activity
* Share this learning with marginalised communities
* Highlight untapped potential for research and engagement.
Through archival, desk- and practice-based research the researcher will contribute new insights and critical reflections to regional and national work that aims to enhance understanding of, and improve practice relating to, queer content in and engagement with archives.
The project will ask:
* What untold stories of LGBTQIA+ lives can be uncovered from the TWA archives?
* How can those stories be effectively animated for and shared with both the current LGBTQIA+ community in the region and wider communities?
* How could sharing queer stories from the TWA archives serve to create a space where those communities can share their own stories and generate their own community-led archives?
* How could a TWA-based project facilitate exploration of LGBTQIA+ potential in other regional archives?
Using a variety of methods, the doctoral researcher will be supported to address these research questions by the supervisory team of Kate Chedgzoy and Fiona Anderson, academics at Newcastle University; Lizzy Baker, Archives Lead at Tyne & Wear Archives; and Rachael Lennon, Co-Director of the Centre for Heritage at Newcastle University and Chair of the Queer Heritage and Collections Network.
