Job summary This post is available from August 2025 for an initial period of six months, renewable by mutual agreement. Applicants can be trainees in anaesthetics or intensive care medicine, an acute medicine specialty or emergency medicine (A&E), anaesthetics or intensive care medicine; you must have experience of intensive care medicine and preferably have airway skills. They should possess MRCP, FRCA or MCEM as appropriate to their background. The ICU (together with the anaesthetic department) has become well known for using Enhanced Recovery and Goal Directed Techniques for major surgical cases. This has been particularly effective in the hepatobiliary and oesophagogastric patients. The hospital attracts many tertiary referral cases relating to hepatobiliary and oesophagogastric pathology. In particular, specialist expertise has been developed in the management of severe acute pancreatitis, hepatic failure and perforated oesophagus. The Unit is covered 24/7 by three tiers, each with eight junior doctors, with full intensive care specialist consultant support. It is recognised by the IBTICM for training in intensive care to advanced level. A full weekly educational program is provided to the trainee doctors. Main duties of the job This post involves both clinical commitments on ICU and a substantial commitment to acute point of care imaging. This is an exceptional opportunity to spend time with two of the country's most successful point of care ultrasound trainers, to learn from them and gain accreditations relevant to training and spend time with a radiologist highly experienced in teaching ultrasound. You will receive training in trans-thoracic echocardiography in accordance with the intensive care society's FICE scheme with a view to completing accreditation well within six months. Once trained, you could gain experience through learning further echocardiography, potentially expanding to further BSE level 1, BSE accreditation or European Diploma of Echocardiography, as desired. You would receive extensive training in point of care ultrasound with a view to completing accreditation to level 1 thoracic standard (RCR) and further modules to allow completion of the intensive care society's CUSIC scheme or the Society of Acute Medicine's new FAMUS scheme, thereafter contributing to the training of their peers and refining their skills. These further modular imaging competencies offered include critical care lung ultrasound, extended vascular ultrasound, DVT ultrasound and basic & advanced abdominal scanning. Additionally we offer cross-sectional imaging teaching, neuraxial ultrasound scanning and FAST scanning for trauma.
