We are looking for a proactive Museum Retail Co-ordinator to join our team at Surgeons’ Hall Museums, Library and Archive. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the retail experience at one of Edinburgh’s most unique and fascinating museum destinations. In this role, you’ll take the lead on both our onsite and online retail operations. From curating visually engaging shop displays to developing new product lines that reflect the Museum’s mission, you will help enhance every visitor’s experience.
You’ll manage stock levels, liaise with suppliers, and keep our EPOS system running smoothly. You’ll also oversee our online shop via Shopify, ensuring timely order fulfilment and up-to-date, appealing content. Your organised approach to stock storage and clear communication with the Visitor Services team will be key to a seamless and successful retail operation.
This is a fixed-term, part-time (3 days per week) role to cover a period of paternity leave. Working hours are 9:00–17:00, with a one-hour unpaid break. Flexibility for occasional additional hours may be required.
We’re looking for someone with experience using till systems such as EPOS, with the ability to manage retail transactions and maintain accurate stock records. You will have a strong eye for visual merchandising, with a track record of creating attractive shop displays that engage visitors. Experience in developing products tailored to specific retail audiences and aligned with strategic goals is preferred. You’ll be confident using IT systems, including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and managing online platforms such as Shopify.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are key, along with strong interpersonal abilities to work effectively with both colleagues and visitors to the museum and the online museum shop. You should be able to work independently as well as collaboratively, with a reliable, punctual, and calm approach—especially during busy periods. A good level of education is required, with at least SCQF Level 5 (Standard Grade) in English or equivalent, and relevant experience in a retail or museum environment. Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks efficiently are essential.
