Vacancy Ref: 2026
As a result of our continued success in securing work for our Occupational Hygiene Team, we are looking to recruit two enthusiastic and dynamic individuals for the role of Trainee Occupational Hygienist to join our team in Wakefield.
If you are interested in a rewarding career, working for a highly respected, successful, and established nationwide company with over 30 years' trading experience, this is a great opportunity for you!
Roles and Responsibilities
The role will initially focus on shadowing qualified and experienced occupational hygienists while they carry out site work, to gain experience and provide a thorough understanding of the services that we provide to our clients, including a strong focus on report writing.
It is estimated that a minimum training period of approximately 6 months would need to be completed before attending industry-specific formal courses via the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS).
This training period would include a significant amount of study time to become familiar with approved sampling procedures and relevant UK legislation, required to complement the site experience gained. The role would require you to liaise with third-party laboratories in ordering sampling media and submitting samples for analysis following site work, whilst maintaining a Chain of Custody. You will also assist the team in responding to incoming enquiries related to the services offered by the department and gathering information using enquiry response forms and/or telephone conversations.
Person Specification
Ideally, the successful candidate will possess the following:
* A strong scientific background at “A” level standard and a science-based degree is essential.
* An understanding of basic Health and Safety requirements within the UK, regarding employee protection and employers’ duties.
* A natural inquisitive nature to ask questions and investigate to obtain the “Full Picture” of site conditions and work practices on clients' sites and gain an understanding of a massive range of industrial processes.
* Good time management skills.
* A flexible approach to working hours, as the role can require early starts and/or late finishes, with occasional weekend work.
* Ability to work from home on occasions.
* Motivation and initiative, with some studying expected outside of normal working hours.
* A strong customer-focused work ethic, an exemplary professional attitude, and excellent organisational skills.
* A full driving license (please confirm you have a full licence on your CV or covering letter).
* Excellent oral communication skills and the ability to write clear, well-presented, and accurate reports.
* Willingness to provide an enhanced DBS disclosure, the cost of which will be reimbursed by the company.
What We Can Offer You
* 40 hours of work per week, Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm (with some flexibility required to meet clients' needs).
* A minimum starting salary of £25,001.60, which would rise significantly once qualified and authorised to undertake work unsupervised.
* A commitment to create and drive a bespoke Personal Development Plan, formalised by annual appraisal.
