Consultant General Surgeon, Benign Upper GI Sub Speciality Interest

This post will join the team of consultants responsible for the provision of General Surgical services to the University Health Board in Cwm Taf Morgannwg. The consultant will be based at Royal Glamorgan Hospital in Llantrisant, but may be required to travel and work at other sites across the organisation.
The post will be required to share with consultant colleagues in the responsibility of providing outpatient and inpatient services for the local population and in doing so, foster excellent working relationships within and outside the General Surgical department, including medical, nursing, secretarial and support staff, General Practitioners, and management teams. The new appointee will be supporting the upper GI MDT and will be one of the link surgeons responsible for referral of upper GI cancer patients to tertiary centre (Cardiff and Vale).
The post will be part of the consultant on call rota on a 1:8 basis (1:8 Royal Glamorgan Hospital, 1:8 Princess of Wales Hospital) with a 10-session job plan with enhanced payment for the on-call commitment.
Will be encouraged to develop special interests complementary to the existing Upper GI consultants and should be competent in both open and laparoscopic approaches. Expected to work within a team of consultants providing specialist care for patients with emergency general, urgent and elective UGI disease. Experience and training of a CCT accredited doctor on the Specialist Register.
Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join the existing General Surgical Department at Royal Glamorgan Hospital. The post will have a flexible session programme with a general surgical emergency 'on call' commitment 1:8.
The post has been created to provide benign Upper GI service with emergency surgery.
The successful applicant will be expected to cover a week on call as part of the emergency surgeon role and will be expected to provide Upper GI services during their non on call weeks.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* MBChB/MBBS or equivalent
* FRCS
* GMC Registered
Experience & Training
* Evidence of ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients undergoing Surgery
* Evidence of high level of skill in teaching medical, nursing and other professional colleagues in formal and informal modes
* Evidence of active involvement in risk management.
* Evidence of personal involvement in management and administrative roles in health care
Knowledge
* Academic achievements / evidence of familiarity with research methods which have resulted in publications in peer reviewed journals or thesis
Disposition
* Good communication and empathy skills with patients
* Evidence of willingness to participate in a multi-disciplinary team environment to provide an integrated service
* Ability to work as a member of a team, both through communication and sharing workload
* Ability to cope with stressful situations including clinical crises
* Ability to prioritise and organise workload, co-ordinate staff and lead a team
