The Newcastle Hospitals' is a large tertiary teaching Trust, based in a vibrant and beautiful city. The Directorate of Pharmacy provides a broad service across an extensive range of clinical specialities. Our Pharmacists are integrated into a variety of settings including inpatient care, outpatient clinics, medicines information, GP practices, care homes, quality assurance and a licensed production unit. The department continues to innovate and is currently developing pioneering roles to optimise medicines use and promote safe effective patient care. Our close partnership with the Northern Deanery and Newcastle's School of Pharmacy furthers our research and development, and provides opportunities to gain experience in teaching and quality improvement activities.
Main duties of the job
Successful applicants will be team-players with excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a keen willingness to learn and enhance their professional development. They will be given a unique opportunity to gain experience in a wide range of clinical settings and specialities, of which many are tertiary referral (including cardiothoracic, surgery, cancer services, paediatrics, general medicine, emergency admissions, critical care, neurosciences and older people's medicine). We also offer opportunities to rotate through the local mental health trust and our integrated primary care hub, as well as working within the Directorate's medicines information and medicines management departments.
Job responsibilities
The Newcastle Hospitals' Foundation Pharmacist Programme is built on the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's post-registration Foundation Curriculum. Each clinically-focused placement is accompanied by structured learning and is supported by a specialist clinical pharmacist practice supervisor, ensuring that our pharmacists are given the best opportunities to develop a solid foundation of clinical knowledge and skills as they progress through their training. Our foundation pharmacists work on a job plan with protected time for self-directed study, and are encouraged to complete post graduate qualifications, including independent prescribing. Further development opportunities are provided by participation in our highly-valued extended-hours and on-call service, which allows us to deliver more comprehensive patient-facing care.
