What is a Spray Painter (Automotive Refinishing Technician)?
Spray Painters paint, refinish, repair and maintain painted surfaces on a range of automotive vehicles, recreational vehicles and other vehicles in the automotive industry. Spray Painters generally work in either crash or restoration workshops.
About the Apprenticeship
* Undertake a 4-year Apprenticeship and obtain a Certificate III in Automotive Refinishing Technology and earn a wage at a supportive Host Employer (the MTA will find you a suitable Host Employer).
* Attend automotive training at a state-of-the-art training centre.
* Once qualified you will have a nationally recognised qualification.
What will you Learn?
* Colour matching and mixing paints to match paint shades or select pre-mixed paint.
* Applying primer and finishing coats using spray guns and rub down surfaces between coats.
* Painting signs or artwork on vehicles.
* Treating vehicles with rust-proofing chemicals.
* Removing rough spots on vehicle panels.
* Sanding surfaces by hand or with power sanders.
* Covering areas not to be painted with masking tape and paper.
* Removing masking papers, waxes and polish finishing paintwork.
* Touching up paintwork and applying polish to vehicles.
Training is a combination of in person, online and in the workplace.
About you
Essential :
* Currently living in South Australia.
* 16 years of age or older.
* In Year 11 or higher.
* Willing to commit to a 4-year apprenticeship (completely paid for by the MTA).
* Driver's Licence - full-time apprentices must have Ps & school-based apprentices must have Ls.
* Passionate about automotive.
Desirable, but NOT essential :
* Have completed a Certificate I or II in Automotive Servicing Technology.
* Completed work experience in the automotive mechanical industry.
