The respiratory department has a total of 29 inpatient beds on one ward 14b. The physician appointed to this post will deliver daily sessions of care to respiratory inpatients on the wards above on a rotational basis. Ward 14b houses the respiratory support unit for up to 6 patients and can provide respiratory support including, NIV, CPAP, and high flow nasal oxygen therapy. The unit is supported by a well-trained respiratory nurse team and is consultant lead 7 days a week. The Respiratory Medicine department consists of the following areas: Lung Cancer Lung cancer referrals are triaged daily by a virtual work service that is led by a consultant and supported by lung cancer navigator. This allows faster triaging and appropriate investigations requested prior to clinic appointments. At present the department runs two lung cancer clinics, one on a Friday based at Ormskirk hospital. The MDT is supported by an MDT co-ordinator who also participates in the entry of data into our lung cancer database. The data submitted to the national database reflects the high quality service delivered in the Trust. Currently we have 2 lung cancer nurse specialists. The specialist nurses provide extensive support to our cancer patients including Holistic Needs assessments. The trust has implemented an automated "Failsafe imaging System" for identifying imaging suspicious of neoplasia requested both in primary and secondary care. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. All respiratory consultants contribute to the care of COPD patients. Community COPD Services are available to local residents. These have been developed and enhanced to help prevent unnecessary hospital admissions, improve access to urgent consultant delivered outpatient clinics, and to reduce length of stay for admitted patients by enabling formal early supported discharge. This work is being developed as community COPD services are provided by three separate CCG's (Knowsley, St Helens and Liverpool). Respiratory Support Unit Ward 14b houses the respiratory support unit for up to 6 patients and can provide respiratory support including, NIV, CPAP, and high flow nasal oxygen therapy. Bronchoscopy Bronchoscopy is carried out in the Endoscopy Department on both the Southport site and Ormskirk which is well equipped. The Trust delivers around 100 bronchoscopies. As well as lung cancer and COPD specialist nurses the department has 3 dedicated respiratory specialist nurses providing a range of services including input into the education and management of patients with asthma, monitoring of patients with bronchiectasis, oxygen assessments., Transitional arrangements are in place for EU,EEA and Swiss Citizens following the UK's withdrawal from the EU. This post is for a Senior Clinical Fellow in Respiratory Medicine. This is a part-time fixed term post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals. Fixed Term Contract- Maternity cover until August 2025. The position will enable the Respiratory Department to continue to develop high quality Respiratory services. The appointee will be expected to have extensive general Respiratory medicine training and experience with competency and subspecialty experience in all aspects of Respiratory condition management. Further sub speciality interest is desirable and will be encouraged. Applicants must be eligible for full Registration with the GMC at time of appointment.
