An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated, enthusiastic person to join East Sussex Healthcare Trust as a Newborn Hearing Screener.
The East Sussex newborn hearing screening service is a small, friendly and experienced team that provides newborn hearing screening to babies across East Sussex. The service offers screening at out-patient clinics across East Sussex up to the age of 12 weeks. Newborn hearing screening is performed to identify permanent, significant hearing impairment in newborn babies. Early identification can reduce the impact on the development of language, speech, and communication skills.
The service offers 6-day-a-week coverage and therefore there is a requirement to work regular weekends and bank holidays at an enhanced pay rate. The team is based at the Conquest Hospital with a requirement to work at outpatient clinics across East Sussex at various locations. A full driving licence and access to a car is therefore essential.
The role is part-time - 20 hours per week and job share would be considered.
The main duties of this role are to undertake hearing screening on newborn babies using automated equipment. This post will involve direct handling of newborn babies and contact with parents. It will involve gathering and accurately recording clinical and test data relevant to the hearing screening process. Screening takes place on the postnatal wards, neonatal unit, delivery suite, in outpatient clinics, community clinics, and in patients' homes. Good communication skills and the ability to accurately update patient records in the national IT database and hospital systems with screening results are also crucial to the role.
The post requires being able to work well as part of a team and also on your own initiative. You must be methodical and well-organised, and it is essential for you to be able to prioritise your own workload to ensure that all babies are screened.
You must be able to remain calm when under pressure as you will frequently be required to cover busy postnatal wards and clinics alone.
You will be required to undertake a Level 3 Diploma for Health Screeners to become a qualified Newborn Hearing Screener. This is a national qualification which non-professionally regulated staff working in some screening services complete. The Diploma involves a range of written, oral, and practical assessments and must be completed within 12 months of enrolment.
A wide range of staff benefits are available to our staff including staff development, enrolment in the NHS pension scheme, auto-enrolment to our Temporary Workforce Service, access to nurseries at EDGH and Conquest, staff restaurants, and on-site staff accommodation.
In addition to an internal Occupational Health department, all staff also have access to free psychological support through our confidential Employee Assistance Programme which is available to staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Onsite parking is available from only £30 a year.
