Changing Waste are recruiting for an ambitious HGV fitter to join their garage team. The role of the Garage team is to maintain and repair the well-established fleet of heavy goods vehicles and light commercial vehicles ensuring that the smooth operation of the fleet for business requirements is met.

£16,640 a year
Salary is £8.00 p/h for under 18s (£16,640 per annum), and £10.00 p/h for 18-20 year olds(£20,800 per annum)

Work
Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You’ll learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.
What you’ll do at work
Overseen by the Garage Manager the Trainee Fitter will work closely with the Garage Manager and will also need to ensure:
* Adherence to safe working practices
* Assisting in, and learning all aspects of the Fitter role
* Shadowing the Garage Manager as necessary to gain the experience and knowledge required ensuring a timely response to vehicle servicing, maintenance and breakdowns
* A proactive approach to learning so as to improve vehicle efficiency and effectiveness
Key Areas of Role and Responsibilities:
* Assist with the repair and maintenance of company fleet in accordance with legislative requirements (experience and qualification dependant)
* Assist with routine vehicle maintenance to VOSA standard, documented and reported as required
* Assist with diagnosis of vehicle using computer based diagnostic equipment
* Ability to carry out light fabrication work and get trailers and tankers ready for inspection. This will include washing the trailers, tankers and units off
* Preparation and presentation of vehicles and trailers for annual MOT inspections
* Excellent attention to detail managing and maintaining records and documentation
* Working effectively as a part of a small team
* Keeping the facilities clean and tidy and maintaining the site standards.
* Report any issues, shortages and problems to the correct lead
* Adhere to the Site Health & Safety policy in all work activities
* Undertake any course of instruction necessary to obtain or maintain the required skill level for this role
* Ensuring that time keeping, and punctuality is maintained at an acceptable level.
* To undertake such other activities as may reasonably be required from time to time and which are within the competency of the job holder
* Follow company procedures
Health and Safety Responsibilities:
* Report and support in accidents, incidents and near miss investigations by providing statements and evidence where required
* Ensure accidents, incidents and near miss reporting procedures are understood and implemented
* Follow and adhere to risk assessment controls and PPE requirements
* Adhere to H&S criteria contained within the company SOP’s, Risk Assessments, Policies and Procedures, in accordance with the appropriate H&S legislative elements for the role
* Set a personal example with regard to Health & Safety matters, promoting the safety culture through observations, site standards and workplace safety
It would also be beneficial to have some awareness of computer based diagnostic equipment and VOSA standards and how to document according to legislation. Although not necessary as you will be trained on these as part of your apprenticeship.

* Carry out the basic tasks with tools and equipment common to all procedures involving basic mechanical and electrical procedures related to HV
* The ability to keep updated with emerging new technologies within the HV industry.
* Contribute to the maintenance of a safe and efficient workshop and adhere to the company and legislative processes.
* Access specific and related HV technical information appropriately.
* The ability to service, inspect and maintain HVs and trailers to meet company, Driver and vehicle standards agency (DVSA) and manufacturers’ standards.
* Use a range of diagnostic and electrical measuring equipment to identify faults and underlying causes on HV’s.
* Successfully inspect and prepare vehicles and trailers to meet DVSA standards prescribed in the tester’s manual.
* Carry out final quality checks before handover to the customer without supervision.
* Apply advanced diagnostic principles and logical/problem solving techniques and regimes.
* Maintain records to company and operators’ licence obligations and regulation.
* To be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written mediums both internally and with customers on a range of topics that will support, HV inspection and diagnosing techniques.
Your training plan
Training will be at North Lindsey College where you will access a wide range of facilities on offer.
Day release.
You will undertake the Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Service Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship standard.
You will undertake Functional Skills for English and/or Maths if needed.
You will undertake both on and off the training by a team of industry qualified professionals to give you the best skills, knowledge, and experience.

Other requirements
You must be able to travel to and from work and college - due to the remote site locations, it is essential you possess a form of self-sufficient transportation such as a car or motorbike. Apprentices are paid for their normal working hours and training that's part of their apprenticeship (usually one day per week).
