GSK R&D and Digital & Tech’s collective goal is to deliver GSK impact, including the acceleration the discovery and development of medicines and vaccines to patients. R&D Digital & Tech are the key Tech partner to support the R&D Ambition of bringing more medicines and vaccines to our projected 2.5 billion Patients and support our scientists by supercharging R&D with Data. The Quality Engineering and Labs (QE&L) function is a pivotal function for this, as it looks after the 500 systems that support the end-to-end R&D process and all the systems that sit within the Laboratories. There are 17 sites, with around 7000 scientist and 33000 pieces of Laboratory equipment that are owned and run by RD and that work within the Labs in GSK, so it is a complex environment with a lot of legacy systems and software, end to end across the whole of R&D. The Lab instrument is a core but immensely diverse part of the R&D Data and Scientist’s journey. Everything a scientist does includes some form of interaction with a piece of instrument and in most cases it’s software, that create a primary data record, that can then undergo some form of data processing, that is linked to the experiment being executed. This role covers all elements of the laboratory instrument landscape, and especially those that are equipment that create large amounts of data, in particular images data. This will include working with the scientists, Lab Engineering and other functions within Tech – in particular our colleagues within core Tech functions like Onyx and GP&T as a pivotal partnership. This Data comes in a variety of forms with a wide variety of standards and metadata. This Senior product owner will be a partner to bring clarity, standardisation and harmonisation, as much as possible across these critical systems within the Labs in R&D, from early Research, through to CMC and Clinical, and follows the end-to-end medicine and vaccines discovery, development and industrialising processes. In some cases, this will require some creative thinking to find novel approach to solve problems and challenges. The Product Owner, High Content Instrument Capture will report directly to the Senior Director, Lab Instrument Engineering & Capture, and is a pivotal role as it is a core part of the experiment and data journey that starts within the labs. This role is a technical role with a deep understanding of software and how it works to optimise content processing, coding to define approaches and principals, working with technical teams to creatively find solutions to RD problems. For example, how to apply Compression and/or data processing to manage large and process large, complex files. This is also a partnering role, working with R&D to know and understand their business problems. This leader is accountable for the roadmap of large scale of complex processes and systems that should deliver ready now value within the Lab but with an eye on the future vision to ensure that both are aligned and any technical debt is recognised and mitigated over time. Partnership with R&D leaders and other Tech groups is a vital element to the role, to ensure that we deliver on the R&D ambition, and as such a deep knowledge of the Pharma R&D process is very important so that delivery is aimed to be enterprise first, and we remove duplicative solutions from the enterprise over time to simplify the landscape for our scientists whilst not sacrificing on their expectations. Technically, this leader should also have a deep knowledge of what good product management entails, with a very good knowledge of product design, DevSecOps, Quality Engineering and delivery of products that create standardised and contextualised data, to ensure we not only build correctly for R&D but well for a sustainable future. Experience of how to ideate new technology and how that can be embedded to improve the R&D experience, specifically for AI/ML. In addition, an exceptional experience of agile ways of working, product management, financial management and a value first mindset. Most importantly of all, is a proven track record of partnership with R&D and central Tech functions like GP&T. In this role you will Partners with R&D on specific large data producing instruments. Deep Software Technical knowledge, including an ability to apply software development principles, practices and where applicable develop code, primarily with Python but also with other languages would be beneficial. This should include a knowledge of how to utilise the tech environment (cloud, near-prem and on-prem) for the best possible outcome for R&D to do what they need to do to support science. Demonstrated experience of delivering modern solutions to optimise RD opportunities, especially techniques like compute, knowledge graph and AI/ML, for optimized processing opportunities Exceptional relationship and stakeholder building skills to ensure strategic and operational alignment to R&D’s ambitions and strategy, especially with our tech partners in the Onyx Research team, from a compute perspective and GPT on hardware and architecture requirements. Working across the Quality Engineering and Labs team to align to a strategy and utilise capabilities across the team for things like Data Engineering, Engineering, DevSecOps, Quality Engineering and Architecture. Scientific R&D Data is a complicated and many faceted thing, and as such we need to drive standardization, metadata and contextualization, especially across the extremely diverse instrument landscape. This leader should have a strong understanding of data and its requirements, so that they can champion and exemplify the need to drive this forward in support of the Lab Scientist Experience and Data Engineering colleagues. Data applicability also include, but not limited to, image data and the required Storage, processing and pipelining. And the elements of software to support that this does the working with images for correction, compression, 2d and 3d image handling and (re)construction etc, to support the technically very capable scientists to do their job effectively and efficiently. End to End understanding of all Laboratory processes, including a good understanding of the sciences that the instrument supports, within R&D, to be able to support R&D with an enterprise view of what is most valuable.
