Job Summary:
The Production Manager will lead and oversee production operations, ensuring efficient, high-quality manufacturing processes. This role focuses on optimizing workflows, meeting production schedules, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. The Production Manager will manage and develop the production team, ensuring they have the skills and training to meet current and future demands.
Additionally, the role involves maintaining strong focus on quality, health and safety, and regulatory compliance while fostering a collaborative, high-performance culture across all shifts.
Main Duties & Responsibilities:
People Management:
* Provide direct leadership to the Manufacturing Shift Managers and Assistant Production Manager.
* Drive best practices across production areas, ensuring consistent work methods and adopting effective ideas from each shift.
* Facilitate effective communication and handovers between shifts to promote optimal collaboration.
* Foster cross-functional cooperation and support, creating a strong team-oriented environment.
* Promote employee engagement, integrating the company’s "Vision," "Values," and culture into all activities.
* Support initiatives to maintain and enhance the Investors in People status.
* Manage performance through coaching, mentoring, and overseeing disciplinary and grievance processes in collaboration with HR, ensuring fairness and consistency.
* Conduct Performance Development Reviews for all direct reports.
Manufacturing Performance:
* Support strategic department development, aligning tactics and actions with the company’s overall strategy.
* Drive the achievement of targets/KPIs in areas such as Scrap, Throughput, Downtime, Tool Changes, and Efficiency.
* Provide regular progress reports to Directors, Senior Managers, and key stakeholders, keeping them informed of progress, plan changes, and corrective actions.
* Ensure schedule compliance by working closely with the Production Control function, proactively addressing issues to meet production deadlines.
* Display up-to-date performance data across all shifts, communicating key metrics to stakeholders.
Finance:
* Oversee the creation and control of the department’s budget, taking necessary actions to meet budgetary goals and identifying potential issues with proactive solutions.
* Identify potential cost-incurring areas and propose countermeasures to mitigate impact.
Continuous Improvement:
* Foster a culture of continuous improvement, focusing on both people development and process optimization.
* Maintain a housekeeping regime that upholds best practices and 5S standards.
* Liaise with the management team and other departments to ensure smooth day-to-day operations.
* Organize and lead manufacturing meetings, driving continuous improvements in processes.
Quality & Regulatory Compliance:
* Ensure the department adheres to all regulatory requirements and maintains high-quality standards.
Health & Safety:
* Cultivate a strong health and safety culture throughout the production department.
* Manage the Health and Safety team, ensuring its effectiveness and alignment with the company’s Health and Safety committee.
* Promote visibility and action on reactive performance measures, such as severity and frequency rates, using tools like the Green Cross to reduce the likelihood of incidents.
* Champion proactive health and safety measures, setting targets to improve overall safety performance.
Personal Specifications:
Essential:
* BTEC HNC/HND or a Degree in Manufacturing, Engineering, or a related Management discipline.
* Six Sigma certification (minimum Green Belt, preferably Black Belt).
* Senior-level production management experience with a focus on Continuous Improvement (CI), Lean methodologies, and Six Sigma.
* Proven ability to lead teams in a shift-based environment, driving performance through systematic problem-solving techniques.
* Extensive experience in coaching, mentoring, and team building to foster a collaborative, high-performance culture.
* Experience in machine-based medium batch manufacturing and cellular manufacturing methods.
* Expertise in Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to enhance operational efficiency.
* Proficient in budget management, financial oversight, and monitoring Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
* Strong understanding of Health and Safety regulations and best practices.
* Skilled in optimizing production processes and driving Continuous Improvement initiatives.
* Excellent time management, organizational, and planning abilities, with strong communication skills to engage diverse audiences.
* Experience working within a management system successfully audited for ISO 9001:2008 compliance.
* Target-driven, customer-focused, and a natural leader with a strong ability to inspire and manage people.
Desirable:
* IOSH Managing Safety certification.
* Previous experience in a similar role within a medical device manufacturing company.
* Experience in a management system successfully audited for ISO 13485:2012 compliance.
* Knowledge of and experience with Medical Device Regulations (MDR).
