Why this job matters
This Principal Designer is accountable for the technical and functional leadership of the technical domain in the Mobile IP Core team. Plays key role in maintaining EE/BT’s industry leading position in network reliability and performance. Applies specialist expertise to deliver technical work that is typically unique, complex and high impact, requiring both breadth and depth of domain knowledge.
What I’ll be doing – your accountabilities
1. Provide technical leadership across the domain, establish design best practice.
2. Oversee design activities across the domain to ensure component designs integrate and interoperate cohesively.
3. Analyse and inform technical projects, ensuring planned deliveries are achievable and effectively managing risks and issues.
4. Maintain a portfolio of 12-24 month improvement activities that will inform the budgetary and workstack management cycles.
5. Coach more junior members of the team and play a formative role in their development.
6. Advise line managers on all technical aspects of project resourcing and team development.
7. Coordinate the portfolio of activities across the technical domain to optimise overall delivery plans.
8. Provide design authority for complex solutions.
9. Manage technical risk for key platforms.
10. Share knowledge and thought leadership to advance the team’s thinking and provide strategic level recommendations.
Skills required for the job
1. In depth technical expertise in fixed/mobile telecommunications industry with business critical, high availability and high throughput systems and networks.
2. In depth knowledge of IP routing and switching technologies.
3. In depth knowledge of mobile network architecture and IP transport solutions.
4. In depth knowledge of Quality of Service and OAM mechanisms in packet switched data networks.
5. Evidence of strong mentoring and coaching skills.
6. Ability to manage vendors to ensure timely and cost-effective delivery of solutions.
7. Good communication skills with internal and external teams/customers.
8. Knowledge of IP/MPLS technologies.
9. Knowledge of data centre networking and network virtualisation.
10. An appreciation of fixed broadband and voice network architectures.
11. Knowledge of evolving industry trends and customer requirements in the telecoms arena.
Experience you would be expected to have
1. Design expertise in IP/MPLS/mobile technologies and complex design solutions in network technology domain.
2. Identifying risks, balancing the threats and opportunities associated with the risks.
