Job Description
Job Title: Second in Charge of Department
Reporting to: Head of Department
Purpose of the post: To provide professional leadership, strategic direction, and management of the department to secure high-quality teaching and learning, raise standards of attainment, and ensure the progress, achievement, and enjoyment of all pupils.
* Support the Head of Department in implementing aspects of the School Improvement Plan.
* Create a climate that supports and encourages all pupils and department members.
* Stay informed of current educational developments relevant to practices and policies within the school.
* Engage in professional development for growth.
* Assist in producing departmental documentation including programmes of study and schemes of work.
* Help with departmental self-evaluation and action plans aligned with the School Improvement plan.
* Track and monitor academic progress of all pupils, including those with SEN or linguistic needs.
* Support intervention strategies for all year groups, particularly public exam cohorts.
* Promote the use of ICT to enhance teaching and learning.
* Recognize and acknowledge achievements, implementing the school's rewards and merits systems.
* Ensure efficient administrative functioning and resourcing of the department.
* Monitor and evaluate departmental work.
* Ensure English classrooms feature engaging and relevant displays.
* Participate in examination arrangements.
* Act as a role model in high-quality teaching, learning, and assessment.
* Deputise for the Head of Department in their absence.
* Ensure timely and accurate data input for tracking purposes.
* Provide CPD to colleagues to promote high standards of professional practice.
* Participate in team meetings and lead elements where appropriate.
* Promote literacy within the subject consistently.
* Act as a social media ambassador for the department.
* Implement quality assurance procedures to maintain standards across the department.
* Support the organization and planning of subject-related activities and events.
* Assist in the overall running of the department as directed by the Head of Department.
