Casual Hours
Play a key role in the construction and maintenance of the highway network, planning, monitoring, and delivering works programmes within the city.
The Highways Maintenance Service maintain and repair over 500 miles of road and 800 miles of footpaths within the city, as well as undertake construction of major public realm schemes. We aim to improve the pedestrian and transport network as well as provide critical winter and gully cleaning services to ensure roads are safe for residents. Join us to work with a team of highway professionals and undertake project management and supervision activities involved in the construction, maintenance, and repair of highways.
This is a casual position, working as and when required on an ad-hoc basis to cover the needs of the service.
Based at our offices at 90 Leycroft Road, you'll work on site anywhere within the city and occasionally further afield. It is essential you have a full driving licence and a mobile phone. You'll be provided with a desktop computer and/or mobile handheld device to assist you in your daily duties.
What you'll be doing
1. Support and supervise the operational highway construction and maintenance operatives including sub-contractors in the effective and efficient management of internal and external resources.
2. Monitor quality and safety standards including compliance to safe working procedures, such as erection and maintenance of site safety features and equipment.
3. Monitor completion of paperwork, including work records, measurements, and time sheets.
4. Work with other Contracts Supervisors, operational site staff, as well as internal colleagues and external agencies in relation to the preparation and delivery of highway construction and maintenance works.
5. Be involved in project management activities such as planning and organising site works as well as procurement activities for material requirements and engagement of sub-contractors.
What you'll need
1. Experience of planning and implementing highway and civil engineering construction and maintenance works, including planning and implementing work programmes, contribution to drawings and traffic management planning, and developing and maintaining client/contractor relationships.
2. A good understanding of health, safety and environmental requirements and safe working procedures.
3. Working knowledge of construction processes and workmanship requirements.
4. Qualified with CSCS accreditation and have the New Roads & Street Works Supervisor accreditation (NRSWA) and/or other suitable supervisory qualification.
5. Proficient IT skills and experience of updating and developing spreadsheets as well as using e-mail and other MS Office applications.
6. Ability to write reports, maintain databases, and communicate with colleagues.
7. Excellent interpersonal skills to deal with complex staffing matters and conflict, dealing with staff, colleagues and the public with tact and diplomacy.
