The post will be based on Ward 21, our functional 14 bedded unit.
The post will have 7.5 PAs working as Responsible Clinician into Ward 21 and 1 PA providing reciprocal cover for Ward 20.
There is the opportunity to provide clinical supervision of a foundation trainee working into the ward, as well as future opportunities to be involved with undergraduate and postgraduate education, depending on the applicant's interest (all of which would attract appropriately allocated PA time within the job plan).
Proposed full-time job plans have been outlined in Appendix 1, but this is open to discussion and will be agreed on commencement of appointment.
There will be a minimum allocation of 1.5 PAs for Supporting Professional Activities. Additional PAs will be available depending on service need. There are additional PAs available for Educational and Clinical supervision (0.25 PA for the first trainee and 0.125 for each subsequent trainee thereafter).
The Trust supports requirements for CPD as laid down by the Royal Colleges and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities. Further SPA activity will be agreed at job planning depending upon service need (if the appointees were to undertake additional responsibilities in activities such as teaching, training or educational supervision, for example).
Main duties of the job
Jointly responsible for the provision of older peoples' Mental Health Services to the elderly population of North Tyneside, numbering approximately 30,000. The post holder will work with managers and professional colleagues in ensuring maximum efficiency of the service.
Manage personal workload in such a way to ensure, where possible, service contract levels are achieved. Participate in the provision of cover on a shared basis with colleagues for periods of annual and study leave.
Provide continuing clinical responsibility for patients under his/her care and assume responsibility for and facilitate contact from members of staff with delegated duties for personally accountable patient care.
Maintain an awareness and commitment to organisational priorities and ensure these are communicated effectively to colleagues and staff. Engage constructively in debates about organisational issues through a willingness to interact positively with managers - showing mutual respect to ensure a similar level of respect in return.
Effectively balance loyalty to the service and to the organisation through corporate behaviours and have an ability to anticipate change in current political climates showing an awareness of where the team sits in the 'bigger picture'.
Understand the wider health economy and the implications for the Trust, whilst working within organisational constraints with willingness to compromise and share resources.

Person Specification
Qualifications/Experience
* Completed accredited training in old age psychiatry or within 6 months of CCT if Higher Trainee
* Registered or eligible for registration as a specialist in psychiatry on the GMC Specialist Register
* Approved Clinician status and Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act (1983) or equivalent
* Registered for CPD with the Royal College of Psychiatrists
* Wide clinical experience of old age psychiatry in different settings
* Experience of multi-disciplinary team working
* Publications or presentations to learned societies on relevant subjects
* Evidence of teaching and presentation in different forums
* Research, audit and IT experience
