We have an opportunity for a suitably qualified and experienced Anatomical Pathology Technician (Band 5) to join our busy mortuary service. The mortuary service at Wirral University Teaching Hospital includes the main mortuary at Arrowe Park Hospital and a Body store at Clatterbridge Hospital. The mortuary performs approximately 350 post mortem examinations per year and is also a public mortuary for the Wirral. The mortuary has recently undergone a full refurbishment including replacement of all fridge banks as well as a fully refurbished post-mortem examination room.
As part of this role the successful candidate will assisting Medical Pathologists in the evisceration of bodies during post-mortem examination. The other main elements of the role are the receipt of bodies from the hospital and community, release of bodies to the funeral directors and assisting in the viewing of a deceased by the relatives.
The main duties of the role include:
• Evisceration of bodies during post-mortem examination
• Removal of brains for organ donation
• Receipt of bodies from the hospital and community
• Release of bodies to the funeral directors
• Assisting relatives in the identification and viewing of a deceased
• Liaising with the bereavement services, coroner and pathologists
Applicants must be aprofessional self-motivated individual with proven experience of working in a busy mortuary setting. The successful applicant will have excellent communication skills, be a team player and have an ability to demonstrate empathy towards bereaved relatives. You will hold an RSPH Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology (level 4 equivalent) or have demonstrable equivalent experience. The applicant must be able to perform as part of a team, but equally able to work unsupervised. Within this role there will be extensive contact with external agencies such as funeral directors, the coroner’s office, Merseyside Police and the Wirral Borough Council.
