We currently have an excellent opportunity for Terminal Operatives to join our Operations Team. This position is in charge of providing a world-class container and cargo handling service to enable the terminal to meet the needs of its clients. To also optimise efficiency and effectiveness while complying with terminal policies and procedures, taking into account commercial, operational, and safety considerations.
This role works any 5 over 7 days, a fixed day off (but not a set day) and works a mixture of days and night shifts.
About The Role
How will you contribute:
* Subject to training and individual capabilities, employees will be expected to drive plant machinery and vehicles on the terminal, to move containers accurately within the confines of the Port as required.
* Conduct pre and post operational safety checks on equipment. Report defects to control.
* As directed by the Team Leader, arrange under crane all the materials required for handling of out of gauge containers.
* Carry out the fitting and removal of twist locks to and from containers, from a safe position on the lashing platform.
* Assist with the load and discharge of containers from trains at the railhead.
* As part of a team, assist with the mooring and un-mooring of vessels at the berth.
* Ensure that the operations are conducted in a timely and effective manner as per expected standards such that the crane operations are neither delayed nor impacted negatively.
* Operate radio communications.
* Supplement a team involved in cargo handling operations for the presentation of cargo for UKBA, Port Health, etc. plus other cargo handling duties, to meet the requirements of customers, to include the use of forklift trucks and other cargo handling equipment.
* Assist the crane operator in container handling as required.
* Contribute to the continuous improvement process and to the meeting of business objectives.
* Perform a timely and effective handover.
What will you Bring
Qualifications, Skills & Experience:
* Experience working with an operations based/manual handling role is preferred.
* Experience driving plant equipment would be beneficial (i.e. Forklift truck).
* Understand the importance of safe working.
* Flexibility and adaptability when it comes to working shifts and overtime.
* Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
* Ability to work well independently and as a team.
* Ability to work at heights and in confined spaces.
