Job overview
West London Forensic service in-patient wards provide a safe and therapeutic environment for mental health service users that have been detained under the Mental Health Act. The core aim of the service is to provide a safe environment where service users will receive mental health care, using the principles of Trauma-informed Care and applying the least restrictive principles possible. The purpose of the post is to improve all aspects of restrictive practices used while maintaining service user safety, including governance of relevant processes and measures.
This job is intended as an outline indicator of general areas of activity and will be amended in light of the changing needs of the organization. It will be reviewed in conjunction with the post holder regularly. The post holder may be required to work at other locations within the Trust as determined by the duties of the post and undertake any other duties at the request of the line manager that are appropriate with the role, including project work, internal job rotation, and absence cover.
Main duties of the job
* Lead on initiatives that result in measurable improvement in service user experience in the area of Restrictive Practice.
* Coordinated oversight and delivery of care to all seclusion / LTS service users.
* Support the clinical team in developing all service user’s seclusion care plan / exit care plan ensuring service user involvement and monitor compliance.
* Lead / oversee the debrief support system established within the service and support the ward staff to ensure debriefs are carried out with staff and service users following an incident.
* Work with PMVA and the RRP Lead to support facilitating bespoke training in clinical areas to build up confidence and competence of ward staff.
* Support staff welfare and well-being through compassionate leadership and a just and learning culture.
* Always act in a dignified and responsible manner with service users, their family, visitors, carers, and colleagues; listen carefully and respond using appropriate language and accessible communication methods and skills which acknowledge cultural differences and professional boundaries.
* Attend and participate in team meetings, ward rounds, and contribute ideas to multi-professional team discussions.
* Work in ways that support shared responsibility within the team, demonstrating support, respect, and courtesy towards colleagues.

QUALIFICATIONS AND TRAINING
* Up to date registration as a RN (Mental Health) with the NMC.
* Educated to degree level or equivalent.
* Minimum of 2 years’ experience in clinical practice as a band 5 or currently at band 6.
* Trained as a Quality Improvement Coach.
* Evidence of post-registration study/continuing professional development at first degree level or equivalent experience.
EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
* A demonstrated understanding of Trust Use of Force policy, Human Rights Act, Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, and the Use of Force Act Law with respect to its relationship to restrictive practice.
* The post holder is expected to have extensive abilities in delivering innovation and quality in clinical practice, demonstrating leadership skills, change management expertise, and the delivery of clinical developments that have tangible results for service users.
* An understanding of Quality Improvement and how it is used to promote effective change in a clinical area.
* Experience of promoting clinical effectiveness and standards setting via audit and governance frameworks.
* Able to demonstrate training and teaching expertise in applied settings.
* Service user focused with a track record that includes examples of clinical practice that have required collaborative interdisciplinary work to improve adult services.
* Ability to exercise a high degree of personal and professional autonomy and critical judgement.
* In-depth knowledge of clinical care with significant evidence of post-registration development activity.
