This is a fantastic opportunity to volunteer at the biggest and best example of a natural floodplain in Britain. Insh Marshes reserve is flanked by the stunning Cairngorm and Monadhliath mountain ranges and is home to a fantastic array of wildlife, including breeding waders, goldeneye, spotted crake and osprey. It is nationally important for its floodplain habitats, is a SSSI, SAC, SPA and Ramsar and sits within the Cairngorms National Park. Long-term residential placements are an ideal opportunity for someone with an aspiration to work in the conservation sector. With three full time staff members on the 1030 ha reserve, residential volunteers become vital members of the team assisting with, and implementing, the reserve management plan on this internationally important site. South Stack is an ideal reserve to watch seabirds and choughs, with high cliffs, caves and offshore stacks, backed by 316ha of heathland and 43ha of coastal grass pasture. The RSPB Visitor Centre is located at the hub of the site and provides retail and catering facilities for around 185,000 visitors annually. We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic residential volunteer who wants to learn reserve management, with an enthusiasm for wildlife and passion for the RSPB's work. You should be willing to be flexible and get involved in lots of different activities including wildlife surveys, ragwort pulling, fence repairs and chough transects. This role will give you a fantastic experience of what a career is like on a nature reserve with a busy visitor operation. Accommodation is provided, together with basic services, free of charge in a self-contained annex 500m from the Visitor Centre. Time: 7 months, ideally from the 24th March to the end of October. Successful applicants x 3 will be given training and development opportunities by working with current National Park staff. Placements will develop on the job skills through a range of practical tasks, working with volunteers, engaging and dealing with the public. Working as part of the Ranger Team, placements will become actively involved in the care and management of the National Park, including its sites, woodlands and nature reserves. Works will include: Public Right of Way (PROW) - footpath/promoted routes surveys or waymarking. Practical work - including work on PROW, maintaining buildings/sites, workshop days – e.g. making finger posts. Biodiversity work. Event/guided walks/education. We are organising two volunteer weeks March 1-8 and March 15-22 to work on improvements to the main trail mostly by building boardwalks. It will be physically demanding, muddy work involving long walks over rugged terrain and carting in of materials. Accommodation and food provided. Skomer Island are looking for 3 Long-Term Volunteers in 2025: 2 positions Saturday 29th March - Saturday 5th July; 1 position Saturday 5th July – Saturday 27th September. Our long-term volunteers form an integral part of the island team. They assist with the day-to-day running of the island and support the wardens, visitor officer and field worker with visitor engagement and wildlife monitoring. Successful applicants will gain experience in visitor engagement and monitoring techniques (i.e. seabirds, breeding birds, butterflies, moths, marine mammals, etc.) on a National Nature Reserve. Additionally, long-term volunteers will gain experience in path and infrastructure maintenance with training being provided in the use of relevant tools and equipment. We provide free accommodation (including bills) on Skomer. Please note that rooms may be shared with other long-term volunteers. Travel expenses to and from Skomer (from within the UK) are also covered including parking where required. We have a training budget for our long-term volunteers. Training provided will vary depending on the time of year, however may include brushcutter or first aid course. Uniform and binoculars are provided for the duration of your time on the island. A £350 bursary is also available from the Friends of Skokholm and Skomer upon completion of a report which will be included in their newsletter.
