Job summary An exciting opportunity has arisen for a band 5 staff nurse within the Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU) in Abdominal Medicine and Surgery. SAU is a fast paced, acute assessment area which provides care for acute admissions within the General Surgery, Urology and Gastroenterology specialities. We assess patients directly from the Emergency Department and those referred in by their GP or Yorkshire Ambulance Service. This is an excellent area to develop clinical skills, triage assessment skills and contributing towards coordinating a busy, acute assessment area. Main duties of the job You will learn how to triage patients effectively; providing first line treatments and care; responding quickly and appropriately to deteriorating patients; and contributing towards providing high quality patient care. The staff on SAU work closely with the medical team, which includes our Emergency General Surgery Consultant team. You will also work on the Ambulatory Surgical Centre (ASC) where patients are seen directly by a consultant following a referral from the GP. Effective service delivery requires staff to be flexible and work full rotating shift patterns. Candidates should either have current NMC registration or awaiting NMC pin. About us SAU is an assessment area which provides care to patients requiring acute assessment within the general surgery, urology and gastroenterology specialities. SAU has 15 beds, 6 assessment trolley spaces and a seating area and provides care 24 hours 7 days a week. We assess patients from the Emergency Department and patients are referred in by GPs and Yorkshire Ambulance Service via a service called Primary Care Access Line. We then assess patients, provide treatment and then admit or discharge based on results. ASC is an ambulatory area that provides same day care to Emergency General Surgery patients. It is consultant led but has a team of junior doctors, advanced clinical practitioners, nurses and clinical support workers. Patients are referred from GP Primary Care Access Line or the Emergency Department after discussion with an EGS consultant.
