Department The Archaeology Data Service (ADS) provides digital data archiving services for UK archaeology. It is based in the University of York but works closely with external partners, both in Higher Education and in the public and commercial archaeological sectors. All archived data is available Open Access and ADS funding is equally split between data deposit charges and research and consultancy, including a number of international projects. The ADS also manages the highly regarded Open Access journal, Internet Archaeology. Currently over 55 staff are employed. This role comes about as a result of a successful £14.4m bid to AHRC by a consortium led by the Archaeology Data Service to develop and host a Digital Research Service for the RICHeS programme (Research Infrastructure for Conservation and Heritage Science). This new Heritage Science Data Service (HSDS) is funded initially for 5 years with a further 5 years anticipated. Role Under the overall supervision of the HSDS Lead Applications Developer, the Systems Officer will work alongside the Applications Developers and the ADS Systems Manager to help maintain ADS and HSDS hardware systems, particularly any new infrastructure developed as part of the HSDS. The Systems Officer will take particular responsibility for supporting the ADS Systems Manager in installing, configuring, and maintaining the virtual machine (VM) and database infrastructure. This will include monitoring systems and providing proactive support to address issues and ensure optimal uptime and performance. The role will also involve basic programming tasks, for example writing scripts using java, python or another modern programming language. The Systems Officer will frequently liaise with York University IT Services.
