ROLE SUMMARY
We are currently looking for a Lead FPGA Engineer to join our Research and Development team, based in Dunfermline. This is a fantastic opportunity to join a highly motivated team of engineers working for a company who are the world leaders in retinal imaging products. You will provide project and technical leadership for the design and development of FPGA/embedded firmware architectures and solutions for new retinal imaging product development and existing retinal imaging product improvement, as part of a multi-disciplinary R&D team.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Drive concept generation, analysis and development of innovative FPGA/embedded firmware architectures and lead the FPGA team in successful solution delivery, in accordance with design control process.
2. Plan, develop and maintain the FPGA/embedded technology roadmap for emerging technologies, feature implementation, performance improvements, and cost reduction, whilst minimising maintenance burden.
3. Responsible for work breakdown estimates and timely delivery of FPGA/embedded architectures and design solutions for complex multi-engineer projects against requirements.
4. Responsible for the technical specifications, documented design and efficacy of FPGA/embedded firmware architecture and design solutions.
5. Peer review, oversight and technical authority over outputs of the R&D FPGA/embedded firmware team.
6. Execute all aspects of FPGA/embedded firmware development; collaborating with engineers during electronic design; HDL development and behavioural verification; implementation within hardware using appropriate tool chains; hardware bring-up and troubleshooting, working with on chip logic diagnostics, logic analysers, oscilloscopes, and debug tools are required.
7. Responsible for development and execution of test methods for design verification and validation of FPGA modules and systems.
8. Drive continual improvement into the FPGA design cycle for design, implementation and review, including adopting best practices and emerging approaches.
9. Mentor and strengthen FPGA team, both with the practical workplace support, as well as working with engineers through their professional development.
10. Communicate design intent and operational workflow of designed FPGA and embedded firmware architectures and solutions to engineers and management from different business areas and disciplines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
11. Educated to degree level in software/embedded firmware engineering, electronic engineering or equivalent education gained through work experiences.
12. Extensive experience of complex FPGA/embedded design essential – minimum 10 years.
13. Technical excellence in FPGA/embedded architecting and detailed design, including simulated and hardware verification and debug methods.
14. Experience of ownership and delivery of FPGA/firmware design solutions that interact substantially in other engineering areas (e.g. optical, mechanical, software, electronic).
15. Strong competence and extensive experience in development with VHDL or similar.
16. Previous experience of medical manufacture or instrumentation environment preferred.
17. Thorough knowledge of electronics and/or opto-mechanical embedded system design highly preferred.
18. Competence and experience in programming preferred (assembler, C, C++, C# or other programming languages, including low level / driver development).
19. Knowledge of ISO and FDA Medical Design Control processes desirable.
20. Ability to rapidly adapt to new technologies and assess their potential impact and usefulness in diverse areas within the company.
21. An ability to plan and deliver to schedule while managing time effectively.
22. Team orientated, responsive, and customer focused.
23. Strong commercial awareness.
24. Strong written/verbal communication and presentation skills.
