Job overview
We are inviting applications for a Senior Clinical Fellow to join the Upper GI department. This is a full-time, 12-month fixed-term post, available to commence as soon as possible, but a suitable start date could be arranged with the successful applicant.
The post is ideally suited to fully registered doctors seeking to extend their existing experience of Upper GI surgical services, in an experienced and supportive department.
The post-holder will be required to work across both Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley District General Hospital sites.
Previous experience in General Surgery is essential.
Main duties of the job
Ward Duties
* Supervise the clinical and teaching activities of junior trainees.
* Assess all new patients and liaise regarding clinical care with the Consultant and other colleagues.
* Maintain appropriate clinical progress notes in the case notes.
* Keep relatives informed regarding the progress of the patient and obtain Informed Consent for operations/procedures coordinating with the Consultant as appropriate.
Operating Theatre
* Attend the regular operating sessions of the Clinical Team to assist with major surgery and be trained in skills of increasing complexity under the close supervision of the Consultant.
* Assist in the operating sessions of other teams from time to time and co-ordinate, assist with/perform emergency operations.
The Clinical Fellow must assist with the regular outpatient clinics including the ambulatory emergency general surgical clinic under the guidance and supervision of the Consultant.
On-Call
Currently there is a 1:10 full shift system in operation, with prospective cover for annual leave and study leave.

Person specification
Qualifications
* Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice
* MBBS or equivalent
* Higher Medical Degree (MD or MSc)
* Peri or post CCT
Experience & Skills
* Wide experience of general surgery
* Basic surgical training in surgery
* UK experience in General Surgery at middle grade level
* Understanding of research methodology and ethics
Personal
* Examples of effective communication skills
* Good organisation skills (with examples)
* Works well within a multidisciplinary environment
Research & Development
* Evidence of interest in personal development e.g. courses, research.
Health
* Meets professional health requirements in line with GMC Standards/ Good Medical Practice
