Research Associate – Imperial College London
Applications are invited for the position of Research Associate in the Department of Mathematics at Imperial College London to work on applied mathematical modelling problems in the area of physical oceanography. The position is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council, and the main aim of the research project is the development of multiscale stochastic mathematical models of reduced complexity for different aspects of the ocean circulation and mesoscale oceanic eddies. The project is expected to involve a mixture of applied mathematical techniques, statistical analyses and numerical methods applied to geophysical fluid dynamics problems. The project will also involve strong international collaboration with partners from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).
The successful candidate must have, or be about to obtain, a PhD degree in statistics, mathematics, engineering, physical oceanography or machine learning or a closely related field, or an equivalent level of professional qualifications and experience. They must have excellent programming skills. The successful candidate will be expected to work well as part of a team, develop and apply new concepts, have a creative approach to problem-solving, and contribute significantly to the supervision of research students, and to the management of the external collaboration. They will also be expected to demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills, and be able to write clearly and succinctly for publication.
Ability to carry out original research and to produce published research papers as well as computing skills appropriate to the programme of work is essential. The successful candidate should be able to prioritise own work in response to deadlines.
Experiences and strong research potential will be appreciated in the following research areas: geophysical fluid dynamics, computational mathematics, mathematical modeling, stochastic differential equations, together with an excellent publications record.
*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range £32,380 – £34,040 per annum.
