The post holder will practice autonomously and be responsible and accountable for safe, compassionate person-centred evidence-based nursing that respects and maintains dignity and human rights. They will be responsible for assessment of care needs of patients and planning programmes of care, implementation and the evaluation of these programmes without direct supervision. At times they will have management responsibility for overseeing the ward/department and supervising junior members of staff. The post holder will practice in a holistic, non-judgmental, caring and compassionate manner that avoids assumptions, supports social inclusion and recognises and respects individual choice and acknowledges diversity.
They will work in partnership with other health and social care professionals, students and trainees and agencies, service users, and their families. The post holder will contribute to the practice development within their clinical care setting and work in accordance with Trust Policies, Procedures and Guidelines and will be responsible for completing any work-based training associated with the role.
The department provides 24-hour care through a variety of shift patterns. The individual will work closely with the team to plan, assess, and implement care for each patient, carry out a full set of observations, identify PEWS score, and escalate to senior nurse and ED doctors.
Main duties of the job
1. The ability to recognise a critically unwell child. The individual will have exposure alongside the team to patients that are alerted in by ambulance and taken into the Resuscitation room to stabilise the patient.
2. Understand own level of responsibility and accountability in relation to role.
3. Communicate clearly, effectively and appropriately with the multidisciplinary team, patients and their family, visitors and carers.
4. Through practice achieve and maintain proficiency in a range of clinical skills.
5. Following appropriate training and supervised practice, undertake identified competency-based practices which are required for the department, after such tasks have been delegated to them by the senior nursing team.
6. Identify learning and development needs and produce personal development plans in conjunction with your line manager/supervisor.
7. Achieve and maintain competence in mandatory and statutory training associated with the role.
8. Complete documentation of care in line with the Trust Standards for Documentation.
9. The post-holder must act in such a way as to promote a positive image of UHB Foundation Trust at all times.
10. Act first and foremost to care for and safeguard the public, practice in a safe, compassionate and patient-centred manner.
11. Support members of the team and provide teaching and education where possible.

Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registered Children's/Paediatric Nurse on the NMC register
* Health care management/leadership qualification
Experience
* Substantial post-registration experience working in a complex health care setting/Acute NHS care setting supervising/mentoring junior staff
* Evidence of professional/clinical knowledge in area supplemented by specialist clinical and or managerial training and CPD
* Experience/willingness to be a practice-based supervisor/assessor as detailed in the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for student supervision and assessment
* Professional portfolio which demonstrates continuing professional development, evidence of ability to maintain professional registration
* Relevant and recent clinical experience within the speciality/acute care setting, including the supervision/education of junior staff
* Experience of mentoring undergraduate students
* Evidence of ability to lead/coordinate a shift/area of department
