Garden Manager Vacancy (Part Time)
An opportunity has arisen for a Garden Manager role with Helmsley Walled Garden, a notable charity and visitor attraction in North Yorkshire. Helmsley Walled Garden sees around 20,000 visitors every summer and supports an increasing number of beneficiaries through its charitable work. Supported by a range of prestigious grant funders and sustaining a commercial income through ticketed entry, plant and gift sales and garden workshops, we are looking for a new member of staff to join our team.
The right candidate will have excellent horticultural knowledge and ideally some experience of public gardens. We are looking for a team player who is confident in working with a range of different people and who has an understanding of the role of volunteers in a garden setting.
This role is part time – 4 days per week – and permanent. Salary is £32,000 pro rata (£25,600 per annum). Working days would be flexible, with suggested hours full time, Monday to Friday, March to October and 2.5 days November to February.

Garden Manager Responsibilities
1. Design, development and maintenance of the garden, including planning for future garden development in liaison with the Executive Director.
2. Responsible for general buildings and structure maintenance, delegating tasks appropriately to the Caretaker.
3. Oversee aspects of garden maintenance not within the remit of our garden volunteers, including grass cutting, hedge trimming, and path edging.
4. Oversight and administration of our National Plant Collections and Which Trials if required, as well as administration of our community plots.
5. Liaise with the Executive Director to ensure that the plant sales area is kept tidy, presentable, and full of plants at all times throughout the season.
6. Assist in the planning and development of the HWG propagation programme and liaise with the Volunteer Development Worker to ensure the smooth running of volunteering sessions.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
* A minimum of 3 years’ experience in a responsible horticultural role.
* Experience of garden restoration and/or development.
* Good presentation and communication skills.
* A team player and flexible within the role.
Desirable
* A passion for heritage and tourist industry.
* An understanding of third sector organisations and the importance of volunteering.
* Knowledge of Helmsley Walled Garden and the surrounding area.
* Confidence and a willingness to learn.
