This is a pivotal national role responsible for the strategic direction and operational management of our extensive vehicle fleet across the UK and Republic of Ireland.
The Head of Fleet Management will ensure the efficient, safe, and compliant operation of all fleet assets, directly impacting our distribution network and overall business success. A significant aspect of this role involves the comprehensive management of Operator Licenses (O Licenses) in strict adherence to all relevant legislation and regulations.
This position requires a highly organized, proactive, and commercially astute individual with proven leadership skills and a deep understanding of fleet management best practices. The role necessitates regular travel (approximately 60% of the time) to our distribution centers throughout the UK.
Key Responsibilities:
* Develop and implement a comprehensive national fleet management strategy aligned with business objectives, ensuring cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and sustainability.
* Oversee all aspects of fleet operations, including vehicle procurement, maintenance, repair, disposal, and fuel management.
* Take full responsibility for the management and compliance of all Operator Licenses (O Licenses) across the UK and ROI, ensuring adherence to all relevant transport legislation, regulations, and industry best practices.
* Develop and maintain robust systems and processes for O License compliance, including driver management, vehicle maintenance records, and transport planning.
* Act as the primary point of contact with relevant regulatory bodies (e.g., DVSA, RSA) regarding O License matters, ensuring positive and effective relationships.
* Lead and manage a team of fleet professionals, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and collaboration.
* Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) to track fleet performance, identify areas for improvement, and report on progress to senior management.
* Negotiate and manage relationships with external suppliers, including vehicle manufacturers, leasing companies, maintenance providers, and fuel suppliers, ensuring value for money and service quality.
* Ensure the implementation and adherence to robust health and safety standards across all fleet operations.
* Manage the fleet budget effectively, identifying and implementing cost-saving initiatives.
* Develop and implement fleet policies and procedures, ensuring clear communication and consistent application across the organization.
* Stay abreast of changes in transport legislation and industry best practices, ensuring the fleet remains compliant and efficient.
* Undertake regular travel to distribution centers across the UK to oversee operations, build relationships with site teams, and ensure consistent implementation of fleet strategies.
* Collaborate effectively with other departments, including logistics, supply chain, and finance, to ensure seamless integration of fleet operations.
Skills and Experience:
* Proven track record of success in a senior fleet management role with national responsibility, ideally within a logistics or distribution environment.
* Extensive and in-depth knowledge of UK and ROI transport legislation, specifically relating to Operator Licenses (O Licenses) and compliance requirements.
* Demonstrable experience in managing and maintaining multiple O Licenses across different jurisdictions.
* Strong understanding of vehicle maintenance programs, procurement processes, and lifecycle management.
* Excellent leadership and management skills with the ability to motivate and develop a team.
* Strong negotiation and supplier management skills.
* Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret data and identify trends.
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships at all levels.
